"The IRS correspondence audit process is structured to expend the least amount of resources to conduct the largest number of examinations resulting in the lowest level of customer service to taxpayers having the greatest need for assistance," National Taxpayer Advocate Erin M. Collins said of the report during an annual report to Congress.

The rate of income tax audits for those in the lowest income bracket hit 12.7 per 1,000, compared to 2.3 per 1,000 among theose in the highest a nearly five-fold increase. The odds of a millionaire facing an audit were around 1.1%.

Millionaires can hire tax attorneys to fight for them.

How many gig workers can afford them?

Of course they are going to go after the easy targets.

Desk audits are mostly mundane reconciliations of details that don't tie, or omitting tiny reportable things like a 1099Int on an account you didn't realize paid you interest.

I have no doubt these reconciliations are more common for lower earners who mostly do their own taxes.

Flat tax and end all of the BS

But instead it's about congressional power and governmental control over its population - total against EVERYTHING our country was founded on.

Our system is basically not much different from King control

I think it's important to remember that 1099 recipients like gig workers are less sophisticated as a group and just don't file/pay yielding a VERY simple trigger for IRS to send notice/audit for assessment. There's no defense, even with best attorneys that millionaires can afford, for just not filing and paying taxes on that income.

I'm not shedding any tears for them, not sure why anyone would.

Quote from the article(my bold):
  • A White House spokesperson told Fox News Digital that "President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, which is only beginning to build enforcement for wealthy Americans, will finally force wealthy tax cheats to pay their fair share while making it easier for working Americans to get their tax refunds."

So by attacking the lowest in the income bracket this lying administration will be increasing audits on the lowest income bracket and will magically "build enforcement for wealthy Americans" and "will finally force wealthy tax cheats to pay their fair share".

Anyone voting for any Democratic candidate should immediately reconsider their choices.
Among the latter, under pretence of governing they have divided their nations into two classes, wolves and sheep.”

The lowest tax bracket is where a lot of the easiest fraud is, like 15 returns going to the same address or people with 10 kids and no income. The lowest bracket is the portion of filers who make money on their return and have negative tax liability. It makes sense to ramp up audits on that tax group.

Well, my sister just got her tax refund a few weeks ago, 10 months after it was filed.

The IRS does need to hire people to answer the phone. I absolutely could not talk to anyone last year when I had a tax question. Literally not even given the option to wait (hours) on the phone to talk to someone... just hung up on every time.

F*** them.

Is this the population group that were called less sophisticated earlier in this thread?

Remember, IRS Agents were armed and trained over the past 2 yrs.

They may send a car full of armed agents to serve the court order for you to appear at your audit/trial in 48 hours, with all backup and receipts.

And if you get the least irritated or upset at this Gestapo action, they will aim 1 AR-15 in each eye, asking you to explain in detail your issue...

Nothing untoward with that, is there?

Like most things published by journalists, these numbers do not even make sense. If the odds of a millionaire facing an audit are 1.1%, that would imply an audit for 11 out of 1,000. Yet, the article implies only about 2 out of 1,000. Which is it?

On a podcast I was listening to, the guest was an expert on Roman and Biblical history, particularly the history during the reign of Augustus Caesar, and was talking about the Roman taxation that seemed excessive and overbearing to us who are reading the Bible or any other historical documents from that time.

He quipped that if you compare the amount of taxes a 1st century Jew had to pay to Rome to what a 21st century American has to pay, you would opt for the 1st century Jew tax rate.

I feel like this is related to the only fans type of income via venmo that doesn't get reported. Go on Instagram and every other girl has either an onlyfans or some cash app collecting a few bucks for pics. I'd hate to guess how much income is generated total but I'm sure it's big enough where the IRS wants to clamp down.

I don't oft agree with you, but absolutely will here.

Its even been suggested on this very board that not paying taxes on unreported earned income like many gig workers do is a-ok and should be applauded. That's just wrong, criminal in fact.

Taxation is not theft. It is required to have a functioning government that builds roads, armies, sewage plants, water plants, etc. The issue is not taxing folks, its doing so fairly, consistently, timely and then using those proceeds for the public needs.

Most all millionaires pay their fair share. Those that do not, eventually get caught. Unless, of course, they have the last name of Biden or similar.

they were not armed... why are people still saying this?

The IRS does have an enforcement division that can be armed, but these guys are more like dectectives going after major tax fraud. they have and do not arm the regular field auditor.

the normal field auditor is 300lbs and is armed with a pocket protector!

socialist governments need to extract all they can from productive earners in their citizenry so they can redistribute it to the free loading welfare state that supports them as well as pay themselves and expand their power. it always works out well for currency value, growth, innovation, and wealth generation. check the history books.

The most cheating I have seen is going to be middle-class small business owners.

That and the cheaters who file the fake returns.

Article poorly written. Just a guess but maybe they went from the "highest income bracket" to "millionaires".

Why should they cheat. They can hire the best lawyers and financial advisors to shelter assets and income.

The entire tax code for individuals needs to be shorted(ie: eviscerated) and simplified. It is now one of the most overused systems and bureaucratic methods to ensure social change.
