"Abolishing the Electoral College will stop only 3 states from picking the president"

I see this comment the most when grievances are raised about the electoral college. But is that actually true?

Say you abolished the electoral college tomorrow. Yes, you would probably have less focus on campaigning in purple states like Wisconsin or Pennsylvania. But I see the inevitable end game of this kind of system not changing anything. Instead of picking 3 or four strategic states to target, you would instead have politicians pick 3 or four strategic cities to target. So abolishing the EC wouldn't really solve that complaint, it would actually make the gamesmanship going on with elections worse.

What it would absolutely do is make politicians drop any pretense of supporting rural ideals and policies. Their representation would be sacrificed to win big population centers at any cost. So the policy positions from each party would change drastically.

States are supposed to pick the president. That is how our government was set up.

U want a parliamentary democracy?

Move to europe.

Abolishing it will allow New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Dallas, Philly, Detroit, Denver, and Atlanta to pick the President every single time.

Propose a Constitutional amendment and we can have a conversation. Until then this is like most of what the left campaigns on. Emotional drivel with no real intention of doing anything.
A fearful society is a compliant society. That's why Democrats and criminals prefer their victims to be unarmed. Gun Control is not about guns, it's about control.

Think electoral corruption is bad now. Just wait for the day when 4-6 urban county clerks can decide an entire election.

Candidates would spend little to no time campaigning in "fly-over country" states.

There would be no reason for a candidate and president to listen, be concerned with citizens in those states

This is discussion is moot. The electoral college isn't going away.

The Left can't wrap its head around the idea in our government that the states are sovereign entities unto themselves and not just convenient administrative subdivisions of the Fed Gov there to enforce its will. That they are equal members of a Union and that systems that allow a few big population cities to dictate to the rest of the country is exactly what they wanted to prevent. They knew the danger of direct democracy and mob rule and did not want it

But Democrats do because it's good for them and bad for America like all their policies

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

People that attack electoral college go after Dakotas, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, etc. but leave alone tiny worthless swaths of land like Rhode Island, Vermont, Delaware, etc.

Land doesn't vote but if Rhode Island and Wyoming disappeared tomorrow, the country is worse off for losing Wyoming.

if they want to get rid of electoral college i would consider it if the alternative was the political party that wins the most states wins the presidency.

So 26 out of 50 states to win, even if the party that wins the most states has less total votes? What if each party wins 25 states?

"Electoral college" is a relic that in no way matches what founders envisioned.

Win the most votes in Texas? You get 40 votes. No need for the middle step of electors getting together to "vote".

Wouid require an amendment, so won't happen but makes much more sense.

The electoral college is a leftover artifact from America. The new country that has taken its place will get rid of it.

Not a chance in hell.

With The Party in power there's no reason why it won't be gone, along with the 1st and 2nd amendments.

I'm told we have to wait until people "feel pain" before anything is done about it though.

Stop being so dramatic. It would take a constitutional amendment to get it passed and that ain't happening.

The electoral college isnt the problem as much as the two party system and increasing power of of the POTUS

Yeah, two choices isn't really that many choices to decide who runs the country.

How about each parish/county gets a single electoral vote?

then each democrat controlled state would split their counties into whatever is needed to win. California would have 2,000 counties in LA and San Francisco within a week

All they have to do is keep stealing elections and they'll get their constitutional amendment. It might be in 2 years or it might be in 10. But it will happen.

It is not just the Electoral College that the Dems want to get rid of. It is the entire Constitution. That is what I am worried about. The Dems know that a Constitutiona Amendment to get rid of things like the EC, 1sr Amend, 2nd Amend, 2 Senators per state, etc. will never pass.

The Dems need a complete rewrite in order to get the power and control they dream. Or they need to convince people it should be just ignored and forgotten because it is old and out dated.

The only thing that can check the federal govt is the states. Repealing the 17th Amendment would be a better choice if you're gonna have a new Amendment.

Since that won't happen, the only thing the states can do is the Convention of States.

Probably a national divorce is the most realistic option.

Then we will build a new country in the chunk that we control still.

That simple.

Better thing is doing the Maine/Nebraska style which is the overall winner of the state gets the 2 votes for the Senators, and the votes for the House seats are divided up by congressional district. D.C. would stay as it is.
