Scary for sure. Can't imagine what is going on based on the hit that caused it.

Kinda looked like helmet to heart? Don't know if that kind of result is even plausible though.

There are a couple of things that come to mind.

There's a possibility where you can get hit - and it doesn't take a lot of force - at just the right time in the electrical cycle of the heart to effectively short circuit it. It takes just the right amount of force in a millisecond window, which is why you don't see it often.

A second cause, which results in a lot of sudden death on the field in young athletes (esp high school and college) is a hypertrophy of cardiac tissue in the outflow tract of the heart. It's why physicals happen in kids now in order to try and catch the murmur and prevent this sort of thing. They'll be athletic and fine then the outflow gets obstructed completely preventing any blood from leaving the heart.

Or it could be unrelated to the hit and a rhythm that occurred that led to his heart stopping (long QT syndrome).

I imagine we'll hear more in the days to come.
It's just such a rare event to have to do CPR in the middle of a football game. How long was he without a pulse before CPR started? Obviously they had a return of circulation, given that he went into the ambulance without active CPR in progress.

Was my first thought. This **** has happened too often to supreme athletes.

Prayers to the young man and his family.
