If you step into it enough, it grabs you and drags you under.

Senate Republicans who want to move on from Donald Trump are smelling blood after a series of self-destructive errors by the former president that they think is opening the door for GOP rivals to challenge and defeat him in a 2024 presidential primary.

The GOP lawmakers say Trump looks increasingly vulnerable in a primary after what they describe as his erratic behavior in recent weeks, which has raised new doubts about his ability to beat President Biden or any other Democrat in a general election.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) said Trump's most recent self-inflicted wound in which he spoke about suspending the Constitution creates "a huge opening" for other Republicans weighing presidential bids.

"This was another level or another realm in terms of things the former president has said. This one goes so far beyond the pale that if there is somebody who has aspirations to run, this sure teed it up for them," Thune said.

Trump over the weekend proposed to "terminate" all "rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution," in response to a report about Twitter's content moderation discussions during the 2020 election.

The former president committed that own goal as he was still being criticized for holding a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago home with white supremacist Nick Fuentes and the artist formerly known as Kanye West, who has repeatedly made antisemitic remarks.

The controversies have even supporters of Trump shaking their heads.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), who was a reliable Trump ally while he was president, said the comments about suspending the Constitution and Trump's meeting with Fuentes are potentially "fatal" to his political aspirations.
"I do think this recent behavior … these are foibles that are approaching fatality among the group that loves Donald Trump," he said. "That's the head-scratcher.

2018, 2020, 2022: all three years Trump's influence has caused a decline in the GOP.

It isn't all just due to voter fraud. It's due to a lack of leadership in the GOP. Trump is not that leader, and neither are McConnell, McCarthy, or Romney-McDaniel.

Trump is done.

Yes, he'll continue to be an albatross around the neck of the GOP for a good minute but any chance he had in gaining the nomination died the night of the midterms. Even his most ardent of minions are walking away in droves. Perhaps the only people in the country that don't recognize this are the residents of Mar-a-Lago.

We have to move beyond the view that Trump is a victim of fraud. If only the election was clean, everything would be hunky-dory.

Baloney.

Trump is a victim indeed... of his own behaviors.

He would have fired himself long ago on his Apprentice show for his behaviors and results.

It's time we do it.

Donald -- "you're fired!"

The man has had everything thrown against him. To the point where no one will have his back without the fear of being blackballed. I'd probably lose my mind as well. Miracle he's lasted this long.

Liberals and moderates sold their soul to beat him. And they have. Now we have to choose to keep fighting or win. Terribly dirty game.

No. But some of us know when and how to pick battles. Trump has no tactical patience.

How did Trump "fight the deep state"? He was PotUS, he could have fired the deep state. Yes, there was a constant barrage of idiotic "Got eeeeeeem!" BS, but he didn't do jack **** to fix the problem.

And if you don't like the screaming brat running around the restaurant, you hate children. The child sitting quietly and eating with his family (even his mean kid sister) is obviously a swamp or establishment kid and should be shunned.

No they're not all self inflicted. Russia hoax being the big number one. Impeachment 1 & 2 being number 2&3.

Maybe but that's for the primary to decide. And if Trump does win the primary you can bet your butt there's going to be a bunch of people who are anti-trump who would rather lose than see him win. So the loss is squarely on them not Trump.

Right now there's a lot of people pretending that the GOP doesn't need the Trump wing.

The GOP should be doing everything they can to hold on to the Trump voters because GOP in general has been performing at about 50%. Take away the Trump wing and you can say goodbye to any victories.

And Trump people are okay with that! Because they want to burn it all down and start new anyway. So if the GOP wants to preserve itself they better start extending some olive branches.

Correct. Trump just kicked the nest and let us see how bad the swamp really is. I really hope DeSantis has a strategy to keep it stirred, while also implementing policy to restrict them or prosecute them. We must all have the stomach to get swamp culture defeated.

Nobody is pretending that.

You're confusing "don't need them" with realizing Trump is probably going to throw another hissy fit and tell them to stay home when he doesn't win.

The same "wing" of the party that told "CMs" they were the problem if they couldn't hold their nose and vote for Trump is going to sit at home and refuse to vote because of their feelings for the man.

That's bull.

He had a chance to drain it. Then he shut down the country.
He had a chance to get re-elected and he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

Trump allowed the swamp to exist because he became even more me, me, me, me after he was elected. So much so that a person that was clearly mentally incompetent was elected.

Even if people use the "it was stolen" logic, it never should have been close enough to get stolen. Arizona was a gimme state, but he couldn't stop badmouthing one of their heroes even though he was dead. He turned a deep red state blue.

Trump is just as much at fault for the situation that we are in as anyone that voted for Biden.

Now he's going to try and win the nomination again and when he loses it, he's going to go Ross Perot on us and screw us again.
