Gina Carano… Haywire is such an underrated movie
I'll have to look for that one. Love me some Gina Carano. She's a great twitter follow, too.

Edit: I'll definitely be watching that one sometime soon. When you have the lead role and your supporting cast includes: Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, and Bill Paxton it can't be too bad. Plus the trailer looked really good.

She managed to discount all women of all races and all sexual orientation with one simple statement.

Has that actually ever been done before?

What an amazing dumbass.

Don't know how much Quentin Tarantino knows, but he describes Pam Grier as cinema's first female action star.

I think it's nice that she brought everyone together like this.

It's almost heartening to know that, even in these times where people are so polarized about everything, one person can step up and say something so monumentally stupid as to bring the rest of the world together in a collective "wtf!?"

So who would get the mantle of true 'first female action lead' in a major Hollywood movie (let's put TV series aside for the moment)? Action movie and the woman was an ass-kicking protagonist mostly carrying the show (not just a sidekick or eye-candy for a male lead).

Obviously not JLaw. That's hilarious. I'm of an age where I recall Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2) and Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) in the mid-80's/early 90's being considered standout 'action hero' roles carrying a big budget major film.

Before those ones, what prior movie/woman would come to mind (again a major film, not TV series)?

Understand. It was a horrible movie and she was horrible in it. But the costumes were pretty scandalous and it was a soft porn movie. Made by her husband, Roger Vadim.

I think she is everything a real feminist would find abhorrent.

She is a physically beautiful woman who is dumb as a pile of bricks and can't/won't shut her mouth about anything ever in front of a keyboard/microphone etc. so she just breeds/creates more sexism in the world. Oh, and is a big infanticide backer, by the way.

Geeze. Also a repetitive method actress, to boot.

Action movies weren't a big thing before the 70s, I think. Lots of westerns, and James Bond. And women didn't take leads in those.

So my suggestion as to maybe the first headlining woman in a well known (maybe) action movie: Faye Dunaway, Bonnie and Clyde, 1967.
