" Elon Musk said Sunday that free staff lunches at Twitter's San Francisco headquarters were costing more than $400 per meal because 'almost no one' was in the office. "

"He said that according to badge-in records, average occupancy in the office over the last 12 months was below 10%, peaking at 25%."

"Musk was tweeting Sunday after The New York Times reported that Twitter employees would have to start paying for office lunches themselves."

"He said criticism of the move was "especially bizarre given that almost no one came into the office," adding: "There are more people preparing breakfast than eating breakfast. They don't even bother serving dinner, because there is no one in the building."

Musk lives in the real world, not some utopia where people get paid to talk a lot but do nothing.

Good for Musk.

Meta is also cutting back on in office meals for free.

Quote:

The parent company of Facebook informed its employees it would be cutting down on various perks including free laundry, dry cleaning and valet service, as well as delaying the daily free dinner by half an hour from 6pm to 6.30pm, the New York Times first reported.

The pushed-back dinner service means fewer employees will get to eat on campus, as the company's last shuttle bus departs the office at 6pm. As a result, employees will now have to decide between a free meal or a free ride home. It also will make it more difficult for employees to stock up on free food to bring home as leftovers.

In an email to the Protocol news site confirming the changes, a company spokesperson, Tracy Clayton, said: "Our culinary services are first and foremost an onsite perk for people while they're working in the office … We want food to be served to meet that need while people might be working late."

The campuses that these large tech companies had were wild.

It allowed these people to live in their little privileged bubbles in perpetuity. **** em.

Cut the perks and focus on the basics as possible. Keep compensation and job satisfaction at a level to keep employees engaged.

Employee motivation should be to get the ship righted and prove all the critics wrong.

Good Elon.
It goes a long way -- like the wealth of the Lincoln Project and NT types --- toward explaining why they were okay with socialism and even Marxism winning.

Elon has become MAGA lite, Twitter will likely be obsolete in 5 years. Sad

From same link.

Quote:

One employee from Meta's food service team criticized those who said the comments would harm Meta's workplace culture, according to two other employees.

"I can honestly say when our peers are cramming three to 10 to-go boxes full of steak to take them home, nobody cares about our culture," the employee wrote. "A decision was made to try and curb some of the abuse while eliminating six million to-go boxes."

Once Elon gets the employees back in the office full time, as he has already done with Tesla and said he will do with Twitter, he may want to rethink the free lunches.

At my dad's company, he and the other owners had a lot of perk programs for their staff at corporate. One was free breakfast and lunch, Monday thru Friday. Employees were very vocal about how much they liked that option available and saw it as a generosity on the part of the owners. And it was. But for the owners/management team it also meant that employees started their day off on a more positive note, having something to look forward to on the commute in. Bigger, free lunch at the office cut way down on the amount of time people were taking going out almost everyday to eat. So, happier employees, less long lunch breaks, and easier to get out the door in the evening instead of staying later.

They also had a perk that on Fridays, everyone could cut out at 3:00 unless there was some work emergency that had to be dealt with. They offered open bar and appetizers (two drink max). Idea was to get people to chill out and unwind, go home in a good, relaxed mood, and enjoy their weekend. Also well received. And most people stuck around to have a drink or two and a snack instead of bolting out the door.

When I moved to Texas for work in 1991, I felt so lucky to have a beautiful campus for work. I thought the perks were wonderful but some people ( mostly those who move from California) complained. We had free covered parking, we had a nice gym, very nice offices. We had two cafeterias on the campus, and although it was not free it was good and reasonably priced. They closed about 3pm so no food if working late or on weekends.

Doesn't he understand how IMPORTANT Ministry of Truth workers are and the perks they need available to boost their egos as they decide what Truth is or is not today according to the needs of The Party?!

I'm a bit surprised he didn't kill it all together. From what I saw when touring SpaceX HQ I'm Hawthorne last year, the extent of the perks there was a coffee/frozen yogurt stand, iirc.

I have been an Elon fan for > 10 years (I did think Tesla was gonna fail for a few years there, but ****, who didn't?) That said, I think that he completely ****ed this deal and that Twitter won't survive. His... Let's call it acquisition branding wasn't great - grandiose speeches about total, unrestrained freedom of speech evoked images of 4chan lite which sent advertisers scurrying for the exits. He needed to be far more reserved with his messaging. Also, firing literally half the staff on day 1 was too much (and yes I understand that there was A TON of waste there). The people still employed are likely getting crushed by work that other people used to do, and I'd be shocked if 75% of them haven't applied to other jobs.

Wish him the best, though. Twitter was an awesome platform once upon a time, but it had devolved into an illiberal sewer that needed a complete makeover. I applaud him for trying and hope he can pull it out.

Imagine all the gluten-free, fair trade, 100% certified organic, vegan, responsibly-sourced from minority-owned businesses, etc dining requirements of the typical leftist Twitter employee.

My sister worked for Xerox before they had any real competition. She worked maybe two or three days a week. Her boss was constantly asking for more employees while most worked very little. Once others started making competitive copiers, they had a massive reorganization where her boss and his entire department was cut. Their only job was to go out and watch copier installs and glad hand the clients. With no competition, they grew fat....very, very fat.

Sound familiar?

During the early 90s when the pool of qualified workers in computer software and hardware was much smaller, those perks became "necessary" for dot.coms to hire.

Nearly 30 years later? Not so much.

And for the schadenfreude crowd, "learn to code" has backfired. More of them are out of work than pipeliners.
