I noticed there wasn't anybody in the Dem Primary, but figured that they'd get somebody on there somehow, but when i went to vote in Bell County today, I was surprised to see he was it. I'm really surprised because WillCo gets more and more purple every year and MJ Hegar wasn't that far off of getting him. His next challenger was pretty weak, but I'm genuinely shocked that he went unopposed in a very blue adjacent county.

Normally our State Rep, Hugh Shine (great guy) runs unopposed but he did have challenger from Killeen this year.

I've heard of some US Rep seats in the northeast unchallenged by Republicans, but can't remember the last time I saw it in Texas.

I am surprised of this too. Hegar did well in WilCo in 2020 and Beto took the county in 2018.

Met Carter a number of times. I genuinely think he is a really good dude. He has said publicly several times that the GOP needs to find someone to run for his seat that is younger and more relatable because we're well past the point of thinking we'll keep winning with old, boring, white guys. He gets it.

It's not that unusual. Certain seats will never be competitive for one party so unless someone just wants to pay the filing fee on their own, there will not be a candidate from the other party on the ballot. If someone does run, they won't get any support from the national or state party because it would be a waste of money.

SJL has often has had no Republican challenger because she'll get 90% of the vote no matter what.

i'd run from BellCo, but then my TexAgs post history would be used against me. I think anybody from Bell County is going to have a hard time.unseating a candidate from the south.

There were quite a few on the Harris County ballot that were declared winners because they are unopposed. Some R's, but mainly D's - as could be expected in deep blue Houston.

yeah i'm fairly used to it for judges, state reps in solid areas, etc. but not for US Reps.

I get SJL being unopposed though.

I am not a fan, he never does anything except a token veteran issue.

This is the same guy who supported the gang of 8 immigration bill.

Very leaning RINO Republican

John is a good dude, his son was a good friend of mine in high school. He let me off with a slap on the wrist for an MIP I got during a pasture party when he was a judge.

Meaning he dismissed the MIP, or that you just had to pay the fine? (Said as someone who had two MIPs back in the day.)

I have a very politically connected friend in Belton that went up to meet with him and share some of these thoughts and shared this sentiment.

I'm not opposed to all RINO types and Carter has a mostly good voting record. He butters his bread with Fort Hood every year and I don't begrudge that. But new blood would be nice.

Judge Carter's a good man. Really busts his ass for veterans. He's also an old-school appropriator, so he's going to vote for all the spending bills. Has to if he wants to be a Cardinal next Congress. If Leadership were more based, he'd probably be the conductor on the New Right patronage train.

So I followed up on this thread because I own a business in a particular industry that many of us had a lot of money sunk in that a federal judge basically stripped from us back in about 2009 or 2010. Literally, 99.99% of this country couldn't give a sh** less and frankly they shouldn't. I drafted a letter that our organization actually submitted to some Congressional registry and I was asked to speak to a congressional committee which I did.

Carter took it up. He was just flat out spot on in the way he handled it. We made our statements, said our peace, and he took it from there. He said "I got this boys, just relax". And he slipped a rider in the 2010 or 2011 (don't recall right now) omnibus that literally wiped away the problem as a matter of federal law. Just like that.

So yeah, I like the guy. He actually stepped up and personally helped his constituents and other fellow Texas business owners. Like a boss. Quietly and securely. I was impressed.
