SNL has been leaning towards more comedians in the past 5 years or so than your typical improv route.

Shane Gillis was hired for like a week, and then someone found an old podcast episode from a few years back where he used some sort of slur towards gay people, the outrage brigade got involved, and Lorne fired him.
