Poll: Oregon Could Elect Its First Republican Governor Since 1982

Quote:

Oregon voters could be ready to elect their first Republican governor since the 1980s, according to a poll released this week.

Thirty-two percent of Oregon voters say they would vote for Republican candidate Christine Drazan, according to an independent poll published by the Oregonian on Wednesday. Democratic candidate Tina Kotek is neck and neck with Drazan at 31 percentthe second time this year a poll has shown Kotek trailing behind. Independent candidate Betsy Johnson sits at 18 percent.

If she wins, Drazan would be the first Republican governor elected in Oregon since 1982, when GOP incumbent Victor Atiyeh won reelection.

The news comes as Democrats mount a massive campaign to keep Oregon blue. The Democratic Governors Association this year has donated more than $3 million to Kotek, including $1.25 million in September. The Cook Political Report and the University of Virginia's Center for Politics have both moved the race to a "tossup" since August.

predict it has R - 59 cents, Dem 43 cents. This says that right now people are putting more money on R than D.

A month ago it was trading at R 27 cents, Dem 73 cents.

I hope not. If another commie is elected, then Eastern Oregon will secede, which is needed. It will be a framework on how counties/states can move away from communism in the future.

Electing a Republican might be intentional by the establishment. They don't want anyone off the reservation.

1982, the last time the establishment pushed through massive massive amounts of inflation under Jimmy Carter... I guess they were fed up with everything back then also!

A lot of dumbasses in Oregon, especially close to the ocean (the pacific seems to draw them to it). I'm skeptical even Phil Knight money can overcome the communists there.

Everything like highest inflation, highest interest rates in 40 years is happening, so why not the first GOP Oregon governor in 40 years?

Do they have a runoff if none of the candidates get over 50%? If so, the D would certainly win.

While a republican governor would be a hopeful sign, that is about all it would be.

With out a legislature that will assist them in passing legislation, he/she is a show dog.

They went to mail in only several years back. They worked out the early kinks and it was functioning okay from all appearances. (That may not actually be true, of course.)

In any event, those are their laws.

To me, saying Oregon may turn Red for Governor is almost the same as folks claiming Texas would go Blue.

It could happen, but I doubt it.

But the polls are supporting one and not the other. It is simply due to the fact that conservatives have rallied around one candidate while the liberals have two candidates that are fighting each other. If it was just a one-on-one with a R v. D it would be D in a landslide. The 'independent' is siphoning D votes

Oregon residents can correct me if I'm wrong.

Pretty sure if this happened, it would be the first newly elected GOP office holder to win a statewide election since Oregon implemented universal mail in voting after 1998.

Gordon Smith won his Senate seat before universal mail in voting in 1996. He did win one more time as an incumbent in 2002. Two years after universal mail in balloting. He lost in 2008.

I think this has more to do with the jerrymandering the dems did than anything to do with mail in voting.

Also Gordon Smith is interesting name to drop. Lived in po dunk pendleton, believe he is mormon, and drove around eastern Oregon in a Ferrari.

Even the Rs in oregon are a little off.

She is a former dem, believe the dem party decided to endorse a crazy communist instead of her because johnson endorsed a republican in some smaller race. She decided to run anyways.

Gerrymandering doesn't come into play with offices voted on by the entire state. I noted that I was talking about statewide offices in the post. But yes of course in district level races that's a factor. But I was mentioning the factoid more for fun than anything.
