Never change, Hedge.

Makes it so much easier to know when you're back.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

What a bunch of poosies
We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have, or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b******, were going to rip out their living G*******d guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun c********** by the bushel-f****** basket. War is a bloody killing business. You've got to spill their blood or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shot them in the guts.

A lot of those e-mail phrases are just formulaic ... a way of beginning or ending a message so that there is some intro or closure.

Nothing to think twice about.

If you have any questions about this post, let me know and I'll circle back.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/real-life/article-11301843/The-worst-emojis-use-2022-Passive-aggressive-thumbs-used-old-people.html

  • Gen Z sees the thumbs up emoji as rude or passive aggressive, they say
  • The emoji is commonly used in casual and professional conversation
  • People aged 35 and over are more likely to use the symbol but it is alienating

...the icon appears to have a very different, 'rude' meaning for the younger generation.

'No one my age in the office does it, but the Gen X people always do it. Took me a bit to adjust and get [it] out of my head that it means they're mad at me,' he added.

Others agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and unaccommodating.

Business consultant Sue Ellson says it is important to understand the dynamic of your workplace before sending emojis - especially the thumbs up

'My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send info to each other on and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up.

'I don't know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,' one woman said.

I asked my college kids who work for me this morning

Of the 6, 1 of them does find it offensive.

"I think it is dismissive. It is rude not to say good job or whatever you think that thumb means. Words mean something."

"So does a Gig'em."

A what?

"Do you not notice that amongst the Tiger stuff on the walls, there is Texas A&M stuff? That is where she went. They do a thumbs up as a hand signal. Kinda like the Texas Longhorns make the horn sign. Or in my mom's mind, the devil sign. I saw how they are with other Aggies at the game last year."

I just laughed. Thanked for her answer and said I would remember not to use when I answer her texts.

Things that would offend me:
1. Someone coming up to me and telling me to **** off
2. Someone going up to a minority and calling them the n-word
3. Someone dissing the United States of America

Things that would not offend me
1. The gig-em sign, that's been around for hundreds of years
2. The OK sign that's been around for hundreds of years

Now, this may be just my personal bias, but i don't particularly like the horns up sign, but can't really say it offends me.

So some reddit poster said something about the thumbs up emoji being dumb (almost a year ago) and Daily Mail writes and article about how Gen Z is "cancelling" it? And a bunch of other outlets are running with it acting like there's some huge cancel culture movement against emojis? Are these people ****ing serious?

One of the most annoying things GenZ does is answer every question with "yeah, so...."

Q. What color is the sky?
A. Yeah, so the sky is blue.

Q. What is your major?
A. Yeah, so my major is English.

Q. What are you doing this weekend?
A. Yeah, so I am going to a concert.

Thumbs up used all the time in MS Teams as a way to end the conversation, confirms receipt of a message, or confirms an assumption.

Saves time typing. What a bunch of kids.

I'll play along, though I'm not quite old enough to be a boomer.

I'm not offended by someone kneeling. I just think in most cases it is incredibly ignorant. Both of my grandfathers fought (WWII and Korea) for what that flag represents.

I have dozens of former students and former players that have served or are currently serving our nation.

Watching a multi-millionaire athlete virtue signal about the "oppression" in the most free and most economically mobile society in the history of the world is both comical and off-putting.

I don't say the pledge of allegiance every day nor do I sing the national anthem every time I hear it, but I do stop, uncover, and show my respect to my late grandads, my former students, my classmates and friends, and the nation that they put their lives on the line for.

To all the rational folks that ignored the troll or have them on ignore, I apologize for contributing to the derail. Just felt the need to speak up.

They consider it rude to just give a thumbs up instead of acknowledging the reasons behind giving them the thumbs up. Like you give them a thumbs up for filing a trip report 3 days late instead of a month. They're just looking for another trophy where none is warranted

So freaking annoying. On par with them thanking you for asking them a question in a job interview.

Me: Asks the interviewee a question.

Interviewee: "Thank you for the question…"

Me: It's a ****ing job interview. That's what's we do. Don't thank us for every question.

So then... what is the non-dismissive way to say "okay done with this conversation"? Or are we just supposed to continue the conversation forever? How do you people ever get any work done?

"Thank you for the question" is a stalling tactic that gives them a couple extra seconds to think of an answer.

I was born long before Gen Z and I've used the thumbs up for all of my life, and I've used the emoji as long as I've used text messages. If that offends you because of some moron on Reddit, I DON'T CARE.

I've used the thumb and forefinger OK (and "made ya look") sign all my life. If that offends you because of some moron on Reddit, I DON'T CARE.

I grew up and live in West Texas. I call females "ma'am" and males "sir" regardless of age, especially if I've never met you and don't know about your mental illness. If you can't figure out what gender you are, and that offends you, I DON'T CARE.

And if you think all of this makes me a grumpy old man, I DON'T CARE.
