One of the formerly most gun free areas of the hemisphere:

" An NAACP leader from Arlington, Virginia, has been identified as the American who was gunned down over the weekend while he vacationed in Turks and Caicos, local authorities said."

" Kent Carter was traveling back from an excursion inside a tourist shuttle when the vehicle was ambushed by gang members who fired inside the vehicle "indiscriminately," police said. Carter was killed in the gunfire on Sunday evening, along with a tour guide and one of the assailants.

"I believe the original attack was targeted and carried out by armed gang members who act without conscience, who have no regard for life," the police commissioner for the archipelago, Trevor Botting, said on Tuesday."

"Responding police engaged in a shootout with the assailants, Botting said. Five others, including an officer and another American, were injured in the attack and ensuing shootout."

They lost my business because of vax mandates already, was going to visit but screw them. Went to the Bahamas instead where I still had to do a test (not anymore) but no vax.

They should ask the Mayor of Houston how to run a wildly successful gun buyback program. Take all those rusty single shot .22s and broken 870s……….,,errrrrr criminally owned AK47s and Glocks off the street, reducing crime by a factor of 0.

Went there for our honeymoon 12 years ago. GREAT beaches, very little in the way of nightlife, and the interior of the island is rocky and barren. You cannot beat Grace Bay Beach, though. Just amazing. The people were friendly, but like a lot of places you have to watch yourself. They like to separate an American from his money.

I'm going 24 hrs.

I've known gangs. They don't "indiscriminately" kill anyone.

The assailants were armed with automatic weapons,

You don't indiscriminately shoot an automatic firearm into a bus of people and only kill 2 people. The guide.... plus one.

There's more to this story. Guarantee it.

Been to Grace Bay twice. Simply unbeatable. Unfortunately the island has gone from virtually no crime to having a few tourist murders in the last few years.

When did T&C start requiring vax? I went there December 2020 because they were one of the first islands to truly open up and not require anything (masks, tests). But I guess that was before vaccines were available broadly.

I'm surprised by this as pretty much all that island has is tourism. They didn't have the financial sector like Caymans, or agriculture like Jamaica, etc.

That was the case last year as I was looking at booking a trip. They were getting a ton of money from the UK during Covid that allowed them to stay shut down. Same thing with the BVI (who went completely nuts on Covid and is also one of my favorites but had to cancel a trip to) and a lot of Caribbean islands. Once the money stopped they started opening.

I have been there 5 times. It is my favorite island.

Visited with a local who is in their coast guard.

They have a serious problem with illegal immigrants from Haiti. The belongers use the Haitian labor to build the resorts.

It is just another example of poor immigration policies.

A trip last February to the BVI was the reason I got a COVID vaccine. Flipped a coin between the myocarditis and blood clot version, got the blood clot version{Johnson & Johnson}. Was waiting on the Novavax more traditional vaccine, but the FDA seemed prejudice against a real vaccine.

Spent a week on a 60' catamaran tooling between islands and beaches. Soggy Dollar for the win.

Spent a week at Baha Mar in Bahamas in May. Had great time on the resort, but I always like to leave and see the local stuff. Got a recommendation for a great seafood place. Went downtown to the straw market and bought some cheap junk we didn't need and some liquor for the room. The restaurant sucked. First time I can ever remember having fish that was actually tough. They seated us outside instead of inside where there was A/C, smelled like dead fish and had bugs flying around everywhere. My wife said afterward she thought it was to show passersby that white tourists actually eat there.

I understand the local economy is run on tourism, but I don't like the feeling that everybody is really trying to stick it to you/gouge you.

Had a great time at the resort property, but food price was high, and you have to make reservations for every single on sight restaurant (which nobdy told us about). First 3 days we were there for a company trip, so didn't have to deal with the restaurants.

I don't thionk I'd go back on my own dime, which is a shame because the water and weather is off the charts nice.

For tropical destinations, I like Cabo San Lucas better than pretty much anywhere. In the tourist/bar areas I always felt relatively safe. If someone wants to get violent, I am in a relative comfort zone as I was trained to be better at the violence than 95% of the other guys. It's the legal repercussions of the 'guilty until proven innocent' justice systems that worry me.
