San Antonio is considering replacing all the 10-year-old .40s with 9mm at an estimated cost of $2MM. Past procedure was to offer to sell the firearm to the officer in possession of it and those that don't get bought are then sold off as surplus. City manager has decided on his own that unsold surplus weapons will instead be destroyed. Hard to believe these people think it is OK to piss away a couple hundred thousand dollars work of public property without getting approval. The lone voice on the council asking questions about it, once again, is Aggie Clayton Perry.

Way to many politicians have no qualms in pissing away the publics money. It is amazing that so many people just sit back and let them do it with out pushing back. And then we wonder why the same politicians are always wanting to raise taxes and fees. Yet we keep reelecting these wasteful spendthrifts as we pay more and more in taxes and fees. I guess we get what we vote for.

Funny thing is that this is the definition of cutting your nose off to spite your face. Seriously, there are sooooo many 40 cal police trade in Glocks out there that the Glock 22 and 23s just do not sell for much compared to every other Glock, especially used. People get upset when I tell them that I'll only give them like $150, at most, for a used G22.... then I show them that the police trade in guns historically have sold in the $300 range. All SA is doing here is losing money in the name of virtue signaling as these would have to filter out through dealers to customers so only good guys would have them. Oh well, idiots.

10 years ago I was ridiculed for suggesting that 9mm was more than enough in the right loads. Now, no one can give away their .40.

How is this legal? Why does the city manager get to make a decision like this? Can he also decide to give away or abandon other city assets?

Have you spent time in SA? If you live in or near enough to San Antonio you will quickly realize that intelligence and logic are not abundant in city or county leadership.

AFAIK, the city manager doesn't have that authority, but rest assured the majority of the progressive nitwits on the council will vote to allow it.

Well if it's any consolation he'll probably destroy the service vehicles once they are EOL to prevent dangerous ICE vehicles from falling into the wrong hands…

Absolutely true about Clayton Perry '78 being the ONLY sane voice of reason on the 11 person city council (1 Mayor, 10 Council). Since SA went to single member districts in 1977 we have seen the local government turn into a circus with clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right of me, stuck in the middle with you.

The city manager reports to the city council and the mayor. He makes decisions based on their directives, and theirs alone. He doesn't set policy.

Noticeably absent in that story is any mention or question asked of the mayor. Journalism!

I know Erik very well, he is the most apolitical and honest person in city government these days. I have no idea how he manages to balance these lunatics demands every year.

I just wish SA would find the chollo that broke into my truck and stole my 1911 so that I can have it back.

But that was 12 years ago, I have lost hope. Hell, I can't even call SAPD and ask if the case is still open anymore because I get transferred around so much that I just give up. Putos.

Don't used .40's usually sell much lower because of their reputation of wearing out faster than other calibers?

I've heard 'em called 40 smith and breakers.

I appreciate you pointing that out. It would be nice if someone would file an open records request related to that direction. And as you stated, Rivard won't say anything troubling about Nirenberg

Police Chief William McManus told members of the Public Safety Committee on Tuesday that San Antonio is the only major Texas city still using the .40 caliber, and officers need the new firearms to be safe. SAPD's current guns were purchased in 2013 and have a life expectancy of 10 years.

"You can't send police officers out on the street with weapons that are not reliable," McManus said.

The city is proposing replacing the guns with Smith & Wesson 9 mm Luger M&P9 handguns that would cost roughly $2.19 million. Their estimates include 2,800 guns for SAPD, 203 for the Parks Police Department, 60 for the Airport Police Department and 31 for Arson Bureau and Rescue Task Force.

Under the city's proposal, officers would be allowed to purchase their old guns for personal use. The proceeds would be used to help offset the cost of the new ones.

"You carry a tool of your trade for 10 years, and it becomes [of] sentimental value to you," said McManus. "Most officers want to keep them."

Why would the officers want to buy weapons that "are not reliable" for personal use?

I'd venture to say that there are plenty of OB'ers that have older pistols that have fired more rounds than the average SAPD Officer (yes Bender, I'm looking at you) that with proper maintenance are still safe and reliable..

What a crock of an excuse....

I was eating lunch at Duncan with him and a few others. He said something about his pickup, so I asked him where he was from. He told me Amarillo.

Only people from the Panhandle used the term pickup. All you South/East/Dallas/Central Texas guys called it a Truck.

Which it is not.

Worked the wheat harvest in the 1980s in that part of the world. If it had a fleetside or stepside body, it was a pickup . If it was a cab & chassis with a manufactured bed/box on the back it was a truck. The F250 diesels we had were pickups. The C30 with service body we had was the "service truck". And of course our grain trucks were trucks.
