And the thermostat and the company don't have any way of knowing whether you get your electricity from solar or not.

Here's another work around. If I recall correctly even "smart" thermostats just use a set of dry contacts to tell the unit to run/not run. Just disconnect those and install your own thermostat, and keep the commie intrusive monitoring device online to get the rebate. There is no feedback from the air handler/ furnace / compressor to tell the thermostat if the unit is running or not. When woke power company "shuts off" your A/C the joke is on them because your own personal thermostat is actually in control.
Well yeah, obviously that would be my first move
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

Could they not just kill the WiFi and override it? Assuming that's how the electric company accessed the thermostats

They probably have 50 connected devices and don't want to reconfigure all of them.

You don't need to do that to disconnect 1 device.

SOP for thermostats purchased through a provider. It's all in the print. You buy it, you allow them access.

But OP leaves that out, calls it "Big Brother" and creates hoopla over nothing. Literally nothing.

When did it become cool to be dumb?

So, you are calling the OP dumb? OP put a link to the article, where it was spelled out. Do you need every little nugget spelled out for you to be deemed worthy?

The fact this occurred isn't "nothing, literally nothing" Regarding your response I will ask the same....

I think is point was that people agreed to this control when they signed up for the plan or thermostat. No one reads anything anymore.

His point was to bag on the OP, and he failed at it.

False. Baggin on the homeowners that bought themselves the "service" they are now complaining about.

Again. These idiots opted in for this knowingly to get a discount on their bills.

It's not a secret.
They should learn the low voltage wiring at their tstat. You can bypass their control with a wire nut and tying 2 wires together to make the AC come on.
Or pull the ecobee off and swap back to the junky honeywell unit they stashed in a box in the garage
