tu, Texas State, Tech and A&M.

When it happens, and looks like SFA is all in, leaves Texas Southern as only stand alone public University.

Can get SFA some of the PUF with A&M or Texas, correct? Why join Texas State or Tech?

Not just by joining a system. I can't recall whether it would take a constitutional amendment or mere statute (I think the latter) but the system regents don't determine which member institutions get PUF money, the legislature does. Most of the schools in the A&M system don't get PUF money.

SFA already has courses being taught at the A&M RELLIS campus...

Considering Foresty is big there (still?) A&M would make a lot of sense.

Only need SFA in the system if A&M plans on dropping the Forestry/Environmental Studies program

The forestry department was already merged into ecosystem management or something like that.

getting SFA would be major improvement for the system when it comes to forestry in Texas IMO.

yea, I went back to recruit Ag majors and found out the forestry department was still on the 3rd floor of the Forestry/Hort building but they don't teach forest management

BS Forestry 1987

My Uncle was BS Range and Forestry 1954

I'm Rangeland Ecology. I can't remember when they merged back together.

Also SFA runs soils lab similar to one on campus.

SFA would be a huge benefit to A&M in so many ways. I hope they are will to join the A&M System.

SFA's Rusche College of Business, Smith Sawmill Service collaborate to serve wood-processing workforce

NACOGDOCHES, Texas Stephen F. Austin State University's Rusche College of Business has partnered with Smith Sawmill Service to provide SFA students with a direct path to business careers in wood processing, an industry that's integral to East Texas' economy.

I've spent 34 years in the wood products industry and have been an advocate of programs like this

Hopefully it's that and not a system of a system like what UT did in Longview: UT Tyler at Longview. Lol.

My impression of SFA is that it has changed for the worst the last 10-20 years. Not impressed.

It was never worth much of a damn in the first place. Several of my dumbass high school buddies graduating from there are proof of that.

Maybe having A&M directly involved, it would improve drastically like the law school?

I went to SFA 3 semesters before transferring. I like the place, but it is definitely a sub-par school (at least the business program) where all of my friends went who couldn't get into bigger/better schools. Much like Commerce, I don't think much of it but I think if it became part of our system it would lift it up tremendously. And I see benefits to A&M having a deep east Texas school with ag related specialties.

Older sister went there. Back in the late 60s had a kick ass music department with their lab bands winning national championships.

She played with Ronnie Laws when he was at SFA.

Didn't Lamar have a sports team plane crash before the Marshall football plane crash?

I remember being at a funeral for one of the students. (Mother's side of the family and all of them had a crap ton of kids like seven to ten each.)

The reason Tarleton State retained its name is because John Tarleton endowed the school (as well as a Youth home in Knoxville, TN) on the condition that both should have his name in the title.

SFA belongs in the Texas State system with its orange twin Sam Houston.

Which system is Sam Houston a member of?

ETA: Looks like this was answered above. SHSU is part of Texas State system.

Damn. Some brutal opinions on here. My wife went there, I spent lots of time there over 4 years and was very impressed. I would have applied there out of high school had I known more about it. My A&M backup was SHSU and I'm so glad I didn't have to use that backup.

They've made huge improvements on their campus since she graduated. She was a big fan of the smaller class sizes and being able to have more interaction with professors.

Whomever they fall in under is sure hope they don't drop the SFA moniker.

Bringing SFA under the A&M System would significantly raise the System's bass fishing collegiate profile.

I would like to see the University expand by bringing a complete system together versus more "satellite" campuses that are basically trying to funnel more money and students to College Station. I think it is better for the students and helps drive costs down. I would also like to see A&M showcase these opportunities more to help guide kids to lesser known parts of the system.

West Texas A&M and A&M Kingsville are amazing places to send your kids and have them get a great degree. Unfortunately they will most definitely drop the SFA name, just like they did with WT.

Their forestry / earth science programs have surpassed TAMU as far as field experience and course rigor.
