In august they changed the regulation from 3 components performed in the USA to 100% of components have to be made in USA.

Buckle, Affliction, ect ect ect rarely produce the garment they just white wash or screen print it abd change the tag to their brand and made in USA.

In August that became illegal. Now the FTC is going after all of the 'patriot' targeting small businesses that screen print FJB and change the label to their brand with a made in USA tag.

The last line of this article is very telling. I wonder if Hodgetwins are next.

Why would anyone be okay with companies ripping off "made in China" tags and replacing with "made in the USA"?

Standard industry practice.

I don't get the outrage. You shouldn't have a tag that says made in the USA if it's not made in the USA

Your Toyota is made in San Antonio.

The components are made in Japan.

See how this works?

So now a shirt actually has to be made in the USA to labeled as made in the USA. The horror!

You're missing the point. This is simply an excuse to harass companies that produce merchandise in support of republicans. They can bankrupt companies easily through lawsuits, this just gives them an excuse to do so.

Seems like a semantics issue.

"'Made in the USA". As in every component was grown, harvested, mined, refined, manufactured, assembled, designed, in the USA?

What about raw materials, mineral or chemical components for inks? I mean, how far does one have to go to the source of every material to a warrant that label for it to be considered reasonably accurate?

Maybe the answer is to not lie to customers about where products are made?

It isn't apples to apples, but the government buys TAA compliant goods all the time that are just assembled in the U.S....but with all the parts made overseas. This feels a little similar. Maybe they change the tag to 'Assembled in the USA'.

Yes, so just say made in Japan if that's what the rule is. If the FJB shirt has to say made in China then make it say made in China.

So what's wrong with FJB shirts that don't say Made in the USA?

Define made.

Then redefine it.

Like, you did with recession.

Then open up investigations according to the new regulation.

It does now, but didn't for 6 weeks. $211,000 fine.

It's not just shirts.
This is in other industries as well. This includes items in healthcare also.

It's the government that has set up this system with China basically.

Products come from China - a few things done to them and you are allowed to say made in USA.

Hypothetically:

What if the cotton is American, the polyester fiber is Vietnamese, the thread is made in Malaysia, the cloth was processed and woven in Thailand, the shirt was cut and stitched in China.

The chemical base for the ink was excavated in Saudi Arabia and refined in the USA, the mineral coloring additives are mined and processed from Uruguay and Australia and blended in Mexico.

The shirt is screen printed in the USA.

Where is the shirt made?

Or a pipe plant near Aransas Pass that was going to stamp "Made in USA' on Chinese made steel pipe?

The point is its another 'good for me but not for thee' example. If the rule is being applied equally then great. But obviously its not.

I work in garment manufacturing, what I do is make things out of the U.S. (or have for about 90% of my career) and then ship the goods to the US.

This policy and or process and or rules has been in place by the FTC, and the FTC rules/laws are enforced by US Customs upon entry into the United States, for as long as I have been in apparel manufacturing (1993).

There are very clear, and detailed, rules of origin for apparel. But for the sake of this thread it is against the law, and has always been, to buy a Tshirt made outside of the United States, or any garment, and decorate or embellish it in the US and then change the label to "Made in the USA".

Garments can only say "Assembled in X of US components" if the garment cut pieces were cut in the United States and shipped abroad for assembly (fabric origin doesn't matter for labeling purposes, only for duty purposes).

The location in which the last substantial transformation of the garment took place, and embellishment is not considered substantial by any trade organization either US or foreign, is where that garment should be labeled as being made. If a garment was completely sewn in Wakanda and landed in the US in finished form then it is "Made in Wakanda"

The transformation rules are how some US shoe companies get away with saying "Made in the USA", they buy pre-assembled Uppers from overseas and join them with lowers in the US, and Bang! Made in the USA. Some upper end ladies wear and high end men's jackets and shirts are done the same way. All the detail work is done overseas, sleeves and bodies are shipped unassembled but then sewn together in the US and then they can be labeled Made in the USA.

Soon you won't be able to say, "Made in the USA," if you don't get domestically produced fertilizer for the domestically grown cotton for the domestically produced fabric for domestically produced shirt to be domestically screen printed.

If anything, you would want authentic made in USA merchandise that says FJB. He probably gets a kickback if it comes from China anyways.
