The fact that people choose to live on top of each other like in New York just absolutely blows my mind.

Blows my mind that people live places where they have to drive an hour to get to the grocery store…. Or live in a packed city/suburb where you can't go anywhere without a car.
Blows my mind people choose to live where youre likely to be prosecuted for protecting yourself or your family.

But can you shoot a feral hog in your backyard? Yeah I didn't think so...
NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

There are good and bad things about both urban and non-urban living.

Urban living is more likely to get you in the bad habit of drinking way too much after work and exposed to more types of people but you also get a lot more snobs.

Constantly being in the city and not going outside of it would drive me insane.

Manhattan on a romantic getaway was always cool but after two nights I cannot wait to get the F out of there and back to normal. That type of life is not normal. I could not imagine living there and do not see how people do it, but I guess you can get used to anything. I hope you live there though but you probably don't.

Have lived in NYC and it is an incredible experience. Nothing else quite like it, and the network you're able to build in that area is phenomenal

People that live that close together tend to develop very specific psychiatric disorders. There are actual names for them.

That is why those who can afford it have second homes away from the city they go to on the regular. The rest of the plebs by necessity must live in pollution and filth on top of each other.

New York city is by far the dirtiest city in America I have ever seen.

And I lived in Houston for 7 years.

Now for some real speculation, let both urban and rural imagine -- what is it like to confine yourself to a colony ship on the way to another star system? Talk about a closed routine to get used to! For some of our descendants it may eventually be a reality.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking as I was driving through central New Jersey

gorgeous corn fields.

somehow ALL the roads are new and beatiful, while hundreds of roads in the DC area are pitted and filled with potholes

and yet now there are massive swathes of New Jersey which used to be bucolic fields, literally ripped apart and boasting new construction of mass mcmansion subdivisions next to golf courses

of course, the non-white and non-rich get to live in hellholes such as Camden, Newark, Trenton, and the western parts of the Jersey shore towns.

Roads in DC suck. Roads in NOVA should be good considering how much we pay in Taxes.

Given traffic patterns on the 95 would still have taken the Acela.

There is something to be said for having space and isolation.

There is also something to be said for being within walking distance of lots of things to do and see.

Ultimately, it's all a trade-off and heavily dependent on how much you're willing to tolerate other people. Rural and suburban living can be nice because you aren't cramped into an apartment, but you can be far from important things like groceries, doctors, schools, etc. On the other hand, city living can be nice because of the proximity of those things, but you also have to deal with smaller places to live, much higher prices, and higher crime rates.

Different strokes. West coast, crazy as it is, is way better imo. I just can't stand NYC after a few days.

OMG I have to get in my truck and drive a nice pretty and peaceful 5 minutes to the H-E-B or Kroger out here in Cypress (burbs). It's awful! Beautiful lakes and kids playing and sunsets and stuff! Yuck!

Instead, I'd much rather live on a crammed smelly city block surrounded by a bunch of big box stores, only buildings to look at, and tens of thousands of people living and swarming within a 1,000 ft radius. Oh, and having a 3k SF house with a big yard is for the birds, I'd MUCH rather be in a 750 SF studio!

If your priority in life is being able to walk to Target or a grocery store, I genuinely feel sorry for you.

Yep, if I'm going to put up with the expense, taxes, crime, and general big city problems at least California has nice weather and cool stuff nearby. NYC is a hellhole

Exactly…endless beautiful beaches, some of the best climate in the world, all kind of outdoorsy activities.

Or you could hop on a nasty crowded subway and go to Central Park and pretend to be in the "great outdoors".

Everyone I know who lives in NYC and has money has a vacation home so they can escape for seasons at a time.

We spent 10 days in NYC back in the summer of 2017. It was great. Never felt unsafe on the streets or the subways. It's a shame to hear how bad it's gotten. But that was before all the Covid bs. I wouldn't go back now.

I live on the West coast now and while climate is great, it's got a lot of problems. I've enjoyed living on both coasts. Neither coast has been my favorite place to live
