had to drive up from DC for a business meeting monday.

staying in Times Square at the Marriott Edition which is 5 stars.

but of course, being NYC there is no parking so you have to drive (in a rainstorm) to another parking garage 5 blocks away

there, the parking guy said something in half spanish half english- but shaking his head I knew it wasn't great. he gave me the address of another parking garage which I couldn't understand

had to call the hotel and they direct me to this other lot (Matteo at this garage was super nice though)

pot is EVERYWHERE

garbage is strewn all around, not sure if that is just because the rain storm moved trash all over or the way it always is

parking is normally $65 a night

it's cheaper as I could take the corporate mini-van

with covid in NYC I don't want to be on a train for 4 hours and waiting at the train station

I live in upper Montgomery County MD not near the Union station amtrak which is about an hour south of me

I was able to stop off at Valley Forge National Battlefield (awesome)

and the Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA (not great)

Asbury Park Beach was the typical obese white trash and half the dominican republic

Times are different now from when you drove but a quick search says you could have saved an hour, a lot of trouble, and some money by taking the train. The hour saved doesn't factor in finding (or not finding) parking.

Edit: saw your post, so starting from Maryland may make it a wash time-wise.

Still, even I know it's a pain to bring a car to Manhattan. Plus the tolls.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking as I was driving through central New Jersey

gorgeous corn fields.

somehow ALL the roads are new and beatiful, while hundreds of roads in the DC area are pitted and filled with potholes

and yet now there are massive swathes of New Jersey which used to be bucolic fields, literally ripped apart and boasting new construction of mass mcmansion subdivisions next to golf courses

of course, the non-white and non-rich get to live in hellholes such as Camden, Newark, Trenton, and the western parts of the Jersey shore towns.

I will likely make it through life without ever going to New York City, which is fine with me. I think the only thing I might enjoy would be Broadway. *jazz hands*

Technically, however, I did enter NYC in Aug. 1998, when I missed the turnoff for the Ags to BTHO FSU at the Meadowlands. That was the game where, you know, Christian Rodriguez blindsided Chris Weinke, forcing a fumble that was scooped up by Jay Brooks, who raced 22 yards into the end zone.

I also went the "back way" up 15 to Gettysburg from Frederick, then to Harrisburg and on to Valley Forge and up to Princeton to stay overnight.

taking the train is a massive pain, not comfortable and not cheap, I save the company money by taking the company mini-van. the train station in DC is not great and worse in Baltimore and Philly and NYC

On a related note, if anyone is trying to drive AROUND nyc, the Tappan Zee bridge used to a safe bet. My experience this weekend would indicate that is no longer the case. It's a war zone all over.

Plus they renamed it the Governor Mario Cuomo Memorial Bridge so there's that. I'm cutting up and over through VT on the way home to be safe.

I always took the Acela between DC and NYC. Generally a good service.

Funny story: I did drive it one time, from DC to NYC. Stopped off in Maryland and picked up a large drink for the road. On I-95 in Newark near the airport, traffic just stopped. About an hour later, still in the same place, that drink came due. So, I opened the window and poured out what was left of my drink.

A few minutes later I opened the window and poured out the cup a second time...

Not sure if the car behind me caught on to the fact that the same cup got poured out twice. Either way it didn't bother me. Heck it was Newark, NJ, and a cup of warm **** was not going to be noticeable anyway!
You can't fix stupid.

Not trying to be a dick, but yeah, driving in Manhattan is always bad. Has nothing to do with the Marxists in charge. It's paid parking garages and expensive. Plus it's a mad house with all the taxi cabs. It's constant honking. The honking is futile because there is so much of it that no one can tell who is honking at who. I had an issue where my GPS would not work because of the sky scrapers.

Cuomo!?

Do old people instantly die when they drive over the Cuomo bridge?

I didn't see any. I was just about ready to drive off the side but there was no way I had enough space to build momentum in the traffic.

Don't go to Times Square.

Also, driving in Manhattan is better than Houston as people aren't actively trying to kill you with their cars, but if you don't have a reserved space, don't do it.

I was in/around NYC last week. Yankee Stadium, LaGuardia Airport, Atlantic City. Rode the train from Tarrytown to Yankee Stadium. Wasn't too bad.

I do have Covid but it has been a minor inconvenience at worst.

And the non elites, which make up 90% of the Democratic voting base that live in crime, poverty, and filth, still vote Democratic.

They have earned what they get.

Blows my mind that people live places where they have to drive an hour to get to the grocery store…. Or live in a packed city/suburb where you can't go anywhere without a car.

Manhattan on a romantic getaway was always cool but after two nights I cannot wait to get the F out of there and back to normal. That type of life is not normal. I could not imagine living there and do not see how people do it, but I guess you can get used to anything. I hope you live there though but you probably don't.
