I would be surprised if you could find 10 Englishmen, in 1758, that did not believe the same thing.
Cancel British history !!!
We can use this story as your daily reminder that liberals aren't serious people. They're working on cancelling American history and now British history over slavery which is absurd. I mean it's not like these two countries lead the way in ending slavery in the west.
Note to liberals on this subject. History is what it is. Unfortunately for all of us slavery has been a part of the human condition for pretty much all of history. We learn from history and we move on. Pretending the bad things didn't happen is the height of emotional immaturity. If you really cared about slavery even a little you'd be boycotting anything made in China and insisting the US pay more attention to what's happening on a daily basis in Africa. Instead you attack people and tear down statues because despite having accomplished incredible things they had the misfortune of living at a time when slavery was worldwide instead of just everywhere but the west. So again you're not serious people and it's unfortunate that everyone doesn't realize that.
You act as if half of the country didn't want to keep slavery around...
Yes we know all about Democrats
Yeah, the conservatives were very terrible people
So are you going to ignore me on this thread now?
What do you want to talk about?

So what? Their opinions are as valuable today and yours and mine will be 160 years from now. Slavery is alive and well today in most of the world. Like I said if you want me to take your opinion on this subject seriously let's talk about doing something that matters today. Cancelling historical figures is the response of a toddler. It's an emotional outburst that has no real impact on anything or anyone. It's the epitome of a useless gesture.
You ignored my response and I genuinely want to know why the opinions of people that have been dead for 100 years or more are relevant. I'd also like to know what you are doing to confront slavery today because the practice is most definitely alive and well in probably 80% of the world.
1. Why do people care about the opinions of Marx and Engels or Lenin? Or even Stalin or Hitler (not 100 years, I know)?
2. The average Joe alone can't do much to "confront slavery", though one way is to not support fast fashion.
Thanks.
1. Marx, Engels and Lenin actually matter in history. Marx's ideas have been used to justify the death of tens of millions of people all over the world including at the hands of Lenin. Those people matter. The "half" of Americans that supported slavery in 1860 aren't anymore relevant than the half that didn't. The real point which I think you missed is that we fought a war to outlaw the practice and the Brits simply banned it. Prior to 1860 slavery was everywhere and had been since the beginning of time. The American left wants it to be about race which completely ignores that black people also owned slaves and it was black people that sold other black people into slavery. Proclaiming it to be about race ignores all of history which does a huge disservice to the facts of this subject.
2. There's actually a wonderful charity run by an Aggie that is specifically fighting slavery in Africa right now. That's their entire mission. It's called Mercy Project. A recurring monthly donation isn't a lot but he's doing God's work for sure. I do appreciate the comment about fast fashion. My 20-something year old kids have shunned it for that exact reason. We agree there.
