This is Amtrak's Southwest Chief #4 from Los Angeles to Chicago. 243 people were on board.

Watching the ABC News live coverage where a passenger is talking to them over video he had taken earlier The entire train is off the tracks and on its side except the lead locomotive. The driver of the dump truck is dead, but so far no reports of fatalities among the passengers and crew of the train.

And if we need to make this political, Amtrak is a government corporation, although in this case, it is not their fault.

Read that another passenger interviewed said it would be "a mass casualty event" as every seat was taken and "the entire train was full of passengers"

Why would that many people want to go to Chicago?

Amtrack is a great travel choice, if you have a week to spend on a train…

I love traveling by train. That said, I am pretty sure the federal government has no real need to operate a passenger railroad.

Another accident involving Amtrak recently in Cali where a commuter train hit a car with 3 fatalities.

Over 50 reported injured and multiple fatalities now being reported.

255 total people on the train, 243 passengers and 12 crew.

The SWC #3 from Chicago to Los Angeles is canceled for today. The #4 following a day behind is expected to be stopped eventually, likely in Kansas City. The California Zephyer #5 (Chicago to Emeryville, CA) is current stopped due to the derailment.

This is why I am not a big fan of the proposed high speed rail in Texas. Unless you are going to elevate the tracks so that a large vehicle (semi, dump truck, grain truck, etc.) doesn't get stuck crossing the tracks when a 200 mph train comes through, high speed train with crossings is not something I would want to ride on.

Those guns ain't gonna walk to chicago on their own.

Or a deer, hog, cow, or horse gets on the tracks.

Full Go-Team with the NTSB Chair as the team official spokesperson. Don't see that very often; usually one of the other board members goes with the Chair only going for the big ones.

I'm fairly positive there are no at-grade crossings for high-speed rail. There are also fences that keep wildlife off the tracks because no one wants to hit a deer, hog, or any other animal at those speeds.

Its insane we still have crossing that don't have a full length barrier. One driver's inattention should not have the consequence of derailing a train. Our rail infrastructure needs a huge upgrade.

I spent a few weeks in Italy some time ago., and ride the train exclusively. There are no grade crossings, and I saw a total of 1 horse in a pasture.

A lot of Mennonite or Amish ride the Southwest Chief in between the smaller towns on the route. Some can be seen in the photos.

Per the latest update from Amtrak.

275 passengers and 12 crew were aboard.

The two fatalities on the train were both passengers.

Also, BNSF has a train already on the way with pre-assembled sections of track to install once they are able to do so. When the SWC went over, it took some of the track with it.

The crossing where it happened was on the list to be upgraded, but up until recently, it just did not have the volume of traffic to warrant crossing arms.

Also, it is possible the arms wouldn't have done any good. We don't know if the driver tried to beat the train, or stalled out on the tracks well before the train was there. The NTSB will figure that out, but IIRC, Amtrak trains have "dash cams" on all locomotives.

Or a wind turbine blade (Luling, Texas).

Moot point, since the HSR liberal pipe dream is dead, thank goodness.
