Stayed in a nice Frankfurt, Germany hotel. Room thermostat set to 18C. Thermostat displayed room temperature of 18C [64F] but never got below 21C (70) Front desk said they'd lower my room temperature from the lobby computer??? The room eventually cooled slightly. When asked about my stay at checkout I asked about the AC issue. The desk manager told me, "German law prohibits us from lowering temperature below 21C."

So, just like US hotels the German thermostat lies but the German government prohibits a cool room temperature. I bet Merkel the fatty has hers set to whatever she wants.

F that.

I'm paying to rent a room for the night and for it tobe comfortable. 74 degrees isn't a comfortable temp, for me.

That's just dumb.

We didn't even have AC when we lived in Germany.

I guess you'd have to always pack a heat lamp to shine on the thermostat

Rules for thee and not for me.

One reason why I didn't buy into the nest. I have an online thermostat but, at this time, no other company can control it.

The way nest is setup I think the the powers that be could easily access it.

It's the eventual end of smart thermostats.

Sure, it's convenient now, but the government will end up taking control of climate control in housing.

Enjoy setting your own house's temperature while it lasts.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. With smart meters, we'll eventually be penalized and/or restricted for exceeding usage limits.

21C is 69.8F, not 74F. Dumb law though.

Germans love to be told what to do/think/believe.

Weird, as pre-20th century it was such a rich culture. Beethoven, Mozart, Kierkegaard, Luther etc. would be dismayed. WW1 broke them, imho.

Was about to say, OP can't math. No one should be hot at 21C.

Still not the place for govt to decide

I'm really surprised this hasn't happened yet. 10 years ago I saw a presentation on the Internet of Things where every appliance in your household is connected to a smart grid.

Part of me says f it. We would probably be a much healthier society if people actually had to tolerate a little discomfort.

Check out Heidelberg next time, way more fun... Frankfurt is a sterile lifeless city to me.

Just pack your own thermostat.

They are easy to swap.

I have wondered about this re:work from home. Most households probably had thermostats set in the high 70s during summer daytime, while the office buildings were set to a comfortable temp. If even half the population is now WFH that means the office is cooling/using energy AND the home is cooling/using energy. I would like to see how much household energy consumption has gone up since 3/2020. They will eventually make us Southerners sweat

I've worked on projects related to this and the $ value is nonexistent. Partially because you can't offset usage significantly in hot weather. Also customers can just disengage their A/C wifi. You don't use that much more energy (assuming good insulation) keeping your house at 72 all day vs 76 at work then 72 when home. The extra work your A/C has to do to cool negates most of the energy savings earlier in the day. It also spikes usage during peak energy use time which is also less ideal for the grid.

If you want to save TWhs of energy then just shut down Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. The server farms to store that data is just insane.

Hotels in the USA have been doing this for years. At night when you want to be cool and under the covers, it get hot because they program it that way. They do it to reduce their electric bill. It costs $500 for a 2 night stay on game weekends at a nicer hotel in college station and you sleep in a hot room! It's crap!

No no they are not. Stand alone heat pumps are a pain

Also Most hotel smart thermostats would be a two wire or proprietary connection and are more of a display than an actual thermostat. The central control system has control like in an office building

64 is crazy cold, how could one even stand that?

Yep, US hotels have been doing this for a while. I used to travel a ton for work and downloaded user manuals of most hotel thermostats so that I could put them into override mode and have it actually cool.

How can you stand having it at 77?

74 is what we set it to when we are gone.

We keep ours on 77 all the time. With a ceiling fan, It is perfectly comfortable under a sheet. I can't fathom being hot at 70.

Heat lamps a little overkill. Hand warmer and duct tape is a better solution.

I think something like this is going on at hotels here in the states too, but not any kind of govt control, I think it is just hotels trying to hold down electricity cost. I think the AC thermostats are intentionally out of calibration. It might say it's 70, but feels 2-3 degrees warmer. At least that's been my experience at several locations.

I worked for a company whose Texas branches were controlled by corporate in Minnesota. A thermostat has to have "air" to breathe and regulate, and a controllable one from a remote location gives off a heat signature. Since we were audited and one thing they checked was evidence of heat devices close to thermostats, we just covered the vents over the thermostat cover with clear scotch tape. Unless you walked up to it and looked closely, no one could tell it was sealed. The heat signature from the thermostat itself was jus enough to keep the AC working at a comfortable temp.

I'm suspicious that the thermostat in your room does nothing. It's a thermometer. It's a placebo.
