Even a damp towel over the top of the pan...

And move the pan to a burner that ISN't still on! (or wasn't recently on.... electrics are slow to cool)

True Story:

My brother went to school in Waco and had an old 1966 Plymouth Belvedere. He was always afraid of a carbonator or electrical fire so he kept a big bag of baking soda under his front seat.

On night someone decided to break into his car and the only thing they stole was the bag of baking soda.
I always imagined their initial euphoria thinking they hit the mother-load - followed by the massive letdown when they discovered the truth.

Flour is not necessarily a good idea to throw near a flame. The airborne particles can light up in a flash. Big fireball.
