Even a damp towel over the top of the pan...

And move the pan to a burner that ISN't still on! (or wasn't recently on.... electrics are slow to cool)

My parents and all of my brothers are or were volunteer or professional firemen at one point.
So keeping the baking soda next to the stove was in ingrained into me

You kinda beat me to it, but I think the fact that I found her only fans in a matter of 15 seconds is more a symbol of our times than a 20 YO not knowing how to put out a kitchen fire.

True Story:

My brother went to school in Waco and had an old 1966 Plymouth Belvedere. He was always afraid of a carbonator or electrical fire so he kept a big bag of baking soda under his front seat.

On night someone decided to break into his car and the only thing they stole was the bag of baking soda.
I always imagined their initial euphoria thinking they hit the mother-load - followed by the massive letdown when they discovered the truth.

Flour is not necessarily a good idea to throw near a flame. The airborne particles can light up in a flash. Big fireball.
