What books should be in our school libraries?

Hi TexAgs! I thought this article by Isaiah Mitchell with The Texan would be a great one to highlight since inappropriate content in our school libraries is at the forefront of so many parents', grandparents', and tax-paying citizens' minds right now.

This has become such a hot topic because parents are now seeing what a years-long push to have "inclusive" books on the shelves of our school libraries has resulted in. Many of these "inclusive" books describe explicit sex acts and sexual lifestyles that parents find inappropriate reading material for the age of their children. Many are horrified that some are also on recommended reading lists for their child.

But what can a parent do? How do these books get into our libraries? What has been the response of other school districts dealing with this?

Within the article below, Isaiah explains what one state lawmaker did regarding this issue, the review process that is happening at Granbury ISD, and the frustrations citizens in that school district both for and against these books are voicing, all the while informing us how the process works and what we can do in response on this issue.

I think this is such an important topic for all Texas citizens to be informed on. I hope y'all agree.

Read the article here.

Thanks for having us here in this forum and I look forward to your thoughts, comments, and any tips you might have that I can pass on to our editor!

The library issue as I see it is just a political football. It's a big deal to older adults because they actually used the library when they were in school. These days I'm not sure more than 10% of students even step foot in the library. Most of the research for papers is done online now. Even public libraries are mainly used by parents for their small children to borrow kids books and the weekly story time. I wish more kids did use the library more but they just don't.

All books should be available that are requested to be there. It is not up to the school to censor information, it is up to the parent.

Parental permission can and should be required.

It's kind of sad that supposed conservatives are all in on banning books. I'd venture most of the people have no idea what is actually in the books. Matt Krause certainly hasn't read them and the person quoted in the article referred to Abbi Glines as an adult fiction author. She specifically writes romance stories for a high school audience.

Libraries should be full of whatever the kids wants to read. It's a parent's job to moderate what their child reads and not what someone else's kid reads.

People are acting like libraries are pushing full on adult romance and pornography into school libraries. It's a flat out blatant lie. But too many adults are happy with just trusting a politician rather than actually reading a damn book themselves. I bet you'll see a ton of people recommend "the classics". That because they either haven't actually read a book for fun since high school or they only things they read are marketed and written for an adult audience. Both are exactly the kind of books that don't appeal to young people.

I don't believe that there should be taxpayer subsidized pornography in school libraries. Nor should there be books pushing kids towards homosexuality, transgenderism, or other sexual deviance.

And if that makes me a theocrat for taking that stance, then so be it.

Well the good news is that none of those things are actually happening.

LibsTikTok has disproven your assertion. As have the school boards which won't allow the porn stories from their own school materials be read at school board meetings.

Let's hear some examples then? What pornography is in schools?

Or better yet, what are some of the books that you read that you believe don't belong in schools because they are pornography?
