Apparently there are efforts to have a teacher fired at Paschal HS for not stopping a student from saying n***** during a presentation in class. There is allegedly a video circulating but so far it's been impossible to find, so we're forced to just listen to what the news is telling us happened.

From what I gather the kid was reading something that contained that horrific, terrifying word that causes PTSD in some so the teacher allowed it to stay true to the text. It also looks in the video like it's not a white student giving the presentation, which really makes this quote by a local reverend extra juicy:

Quote:

"Why would a teacher allow that word to be used nine times without interrupting the student and using it as a teachable moment to teach that student and the rest of the classroom why we as Americans, don't use the word?" Tatum said.

Tatum said there's a difference between Black [sic] people using the word and white Americans.

"If Anglos say the word, they say it in hurt, but when we say it, we say it in love. So you cannot compare the two, because one uses it to belittle, to bemoan, to demoralize an entire group of people, but we use it to try to pick us up and not allow any words to take us down," he said.

Jesus needs to hurry on back and end all this nonsense.

I obviously don't use the word but I have zero respect for any black person that justifies that they can use the word but others can't. This logic that the word is out of "love" is a new level of stupid. Your skin pigmentation should not afford or deny you any special rights.

I certainly am perfectly fine with Jesus coming now and ending this crap. But we are the body and we have post-millennial work to do to make disciples of every nation and bring every kingdom/nation under the authority of Jesus Christ! Post-millennial global theonomy is the way.

Consider that it is very possible that it may be another 2000 years or more before the Lord returns. And if that is so, believers today may be considered part of the early Church!

This seems extremely inappropriate on the teachers and student who said it's part. It's totally unacceptable for ANYONE to be using that word in 2022.

End of Discussion.

In casual use, I fully agree. But if you're reading an old book that contains it, that's a different story.

We need to not allow anyone to start putting words on a pedestal. It's a word. A bad word with a bad history, but a word.

Even if reading Tom Sawyer out loud in class? The story didn't specify what was being read, but the student was apparently reading a story with the word.

That "reverend" needs some serious psychological therapy to understand just how awful it is to plant a label like that in young black kids' minds. This same clown probably thinks it's racist to label a perpetual thief a "criminal".

Know your audience. If it's in a setting involving higher education and more mature minds then yes.

Community Colleges/Universities

But if you think middle school and elementary room classrooms is an appropriate place to be reading old literature where the N word is thrown around left and right then you are an idiot.

We are in a culture war. If you succumb to this kind of nonsense ("we can use the word, but you can't") then you are ceeding ground and implicitly agreeing to the other side's terms putting you at a clear disadvantage.

Of course it is. That's why it's there. It's being used so you can see it clearly and learn to identify racism. If you never see actual racism, you will soon confuse other things with it. You will think that criticism that you will receive for life choices is due to traits you are born with rather than perhaps your own stupidity.

The teacher was correct to allow it to be read in a high school. These kids are old enough to learn. The teacher maybe should have offered more context, though even from the story it sounds like the teacher was doing exactly that. If anything it sounds like a failure of the department head and the administration to execute a curriculum.

I think the video would provide some context. I agree though. The teacher was literally providing reasons why the student was using the words.

Now if the kid was giggling and snickering after each time her said it then it loses its purpose.

Then go tell every rapper and black comedian that. They didn't get the memo. We have two standards for that word presently. It's totally cool if you're in one group and taboo if you're in another.

Guess your schools never had a required reading list?

Certainly not a required reading list for summer vacation.

Books - read a lot of 'em and you'll learn some stuff.

My required reading in Junior High, High School helped put me off reading. I did learn a few things though.

Why did you go from college to middle school and elementary and completely skip high school, where this happened?

Completely fair assessment. Tom Soyer isn't some necessity literature that needs to be taught anyway. Reading age for that is around 13-14 which on average would be 9th grade for most students.
