California lawmakers appear unlikely to pause the annual summer increase in the state's gasoline tax ahead of a May 1 deadline, Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said on Monday.

Newsom, a Democrat, had previously expressed support for helping California motorists experiencing pain at the pump by waiting to implement a 5.6% tax hike scheduled to take effect on July 1. The tax is used to fund roads and other infrastructure projects; the state's Legislative Analyst's Office projected the tax will generate about $8.8 billion in revenue during the 2021-22 fiscal year.

So are they raising it, or just not going to stop it from becoming effective?

They literally raise it every year? And their solution to "Californians being hurt at the gas pumps" was to maybe not raise it? And they couldn't even accomplish that??

Do they just want every Californian to move?

Yeah. Of course, they could change that so that it was maybe raised every two years or just suspend the operation of the statute for a period of time. But they want very high gas prices.

Just a quick reminder to the let 'em burn crowd that California is the largest supplier of food in the US and if it were it's own country would be the 5th largest producer of food in the World.

These fuel costs and regulations are hitting all of us at the grocery stores.

Not really. Agricultural receipts don't equate to food.

California's Top 10 Agricultural Commodities

California's agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities. Over a third of the country's vegetables and two-thirds of the country's fruits and nuts are grown in California. California's top-10 valued commodities for the 2020 crop year are:
  • Dairy Products, Milk $7.47 billion
  • Almonds $5.62 billion
  • Grapes 4.48 billion
  • Pistachios $2.87 billion
  • Cattle and Calves $2.74 billion
  • Lettuce $2.28 billion
  • Strawberries $1.99 billion
  • Tomatoes $1.20 billion
  • Floriculture $967 million
  • Walnuts $958 million

I don't think there are a lot of meal plans centered around Almonds, Grapes and Pistachios.

Would be funny though to send a bunch of chocolate covered strawberries to Africa as part of a USAID food shipment.

I have only met 4 or 5 families that have moved from Cali to Texas but so far none of them seems like a problem at all in terms of bringing political craziness here. Pleasantly surprised by that.

The politicians want it to push their move to other modes of transport, whether that be electric cars or public transit.

I'd wager a large percentage of Californians want it too for the same reasons.

The legislature can stop it. They are not. Thus the state is raising the gas tax.

They implement the extra tax every May . They do it in May because they want all the summer vacationers etc.. to pay for some of it. That is why they don't just raise it a little and keep it year round. It's a way to collect money from people visiting and then back it off at end of summer . It's by design.

The only reason they were going to stop it in the first place was to try and offset the red wave. Now that pretty much everyone agrees that is happening they probably just said F it...we've got nothing to lose at this point as a forever blue state.
