I really don't understand the push against tax offices issuing temp tags w/no inspection. That's the whole point of those tags. The biggest problem with paper plates has been dealers selling tags. IIRC, the rules changed where you can only get up to 2 30 day permits from the tax office. What are people supposed to do now when they have an unregistered vehicle that needs to be inspected? Drive it illegally and hope they don't get popped by the police?

so when you buy an obd2 junker, fix it, then need to drive it around some for the readiness monitors to go off before it can be inspected... this rule change makes it impossible to do legally

You can actually be charged with a felony over fake ones.....

The problem is absolutely massive, I was stunned at how bad it really is.

Paper tags from the tag office don't accomplish any of that. They take your ID when getting them and you're likely on camera as well. You can't get a paper tag from the tax office if you're behind on child support, don't have a valid license, etc.

The big issue has been fake dealers selling paper tags for $30-40 for anyone who has cash. This just seems like a really strange pivot

What's the deal with DL's being black and white now? I recently got renewed. Those are objectively harder to discern if really having to match pic with real person.

I look like a Cholo in my black and white photo. Like one of the cartel guys in breaking bad that gets shot trying to protect the drug lord. Doesn't do me any favors when trying to exercise my white privilege with the law.

It's not even that sophisticated. People are just printing them at home with MS Word templates.

Exactly. Give the punishment for fake tags steep, and immediately 80% of them go away. Then it would be a lot easier for cops to investigate those who have them.

With very little effort you could completely eradicate this problem in a couple months.

You mean 93 Camry's with duct tape on the bumper and paper plates aren't legit? How do you know they didn't just buy that at a car lot with no warranty and 22% interest?

Yup...used to be they would associate certain warrants to license plates...it was used as probable cause for certain types of traffic stops...with paper plates...not so much...

Driving on public roads is a privilege. Paper plates should be a probation period where an officer does not need probable cause to investigate said plate.

Getting an inspection requires an insurance card.
Hopefully it will get a few more vehicles on the road insured. At least for a few days.

I know, more fake cards, quick cancellations.
I didn't say it solved that problem.
