The Department of Public Safety said Wednesday that the agency inspected 4,133 commercial vehicles between the start of the stepped up inspections and the end of Tuesday. It said 973 vehicles "were placed out of service for serious safety violations to include defective brakes, defective tires and defective lighting. Additionally, 84 commercial vehicle drivers were placed out of service."

The agency said a total of 13,651 violations had been found. But the agency did not respond to questions about the discovery of smuggled migrants or drugs.

So, 973 serious safety violations slipped through the rigorous FEDERAL system. These guys couldn't catch a cold.

Article is long but informative....

I know! I can't get my fresh avocado anymore because they want to make sure 1000's of illegals aren't entering the border. How dare them?!

They are driving 5 miles to a custom's house, dropping their load, then returning to Mexico a process they have been doing for decades.

Sounds like the Mexicans need to fix their trucks! Or maybe just maybe, Mexico could stop the flood of illegals from South America they are letting pass through their country into the US. I suspect Abbott might back off.

Like with most things Abbott is doing lately, what took him so long? The trucks have been a known hazard to those who live in the border for decades.

That "defective brake" item is usually a catch all for someone they want off the road. It is next to impossible to have all ten brake drums correctly adjusted simultaneously.

The inspector usually crawls under the truck and trailer on a creeper and uses a feeler gauge to check the clearance between the brake drum and the pads. Truck driver buddy of mine said if you really want to piss the inspector off hand him a 9/16 wrench and ask him to adjust them while he down there.

I'm no fan of Abbott, but this is a clever move to get control of the border and to try and force Biden to deal with the illegal immigration crisis. Getting the unsafe trucks off the road is a bonus.

Yes, on I-35 that is basically 95% of the 18 wheelers at any given moment. Some operators (walmart, amazon) seem to have a good safety/maintenance program, imho, but a lot of the others (swift, etc.) just always strike me as 50/50 if the brakes could make a safe emergency stop, about to have a blow out at any given moment etc.

Usually looks like this:

TTUArmy

About 3-4 times a year, state DOT units will sting 1,000s of semi truck drivers, all at once, placing them out of service for safety and compliance violations. The DOT claims these stings are for "educational" purposes, while writing citations for hundreds or thousands of dollars per citation. In short, it's a money grab for the state and it isn't exclusive to the border.

Every week, the company I lease to, provides a company-wide DOT inspection report. Usually, 150+ drivers are randomly inspected by DOT. About, 30-35% of drivers fail DOT inspections. And that is considered above average industry pass rate...mainly because equipment is less than 4 years old.

Speaking of emotional outburst:

Quote:

After the fire of three cargo trucks stranded on the Reynosa-Pharr International Bridge, Tamaulipas authorities arrested three alleged members of the Gulf Cartel who participated in the actions that led to the release of the road. According to security reports, state police arrested the subjects without weapons, despite the fact that local reports had indicated that the alleged members of organized crime showed up to attack the drivers.

The order's impact quickly spread beyond Texas: U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed Tuesday that there was another blockade at the Mexican customs facility at the Santa Teresa port of entry in southern New Mexico, not far from El Paso. Those protests are misguided since New Mexico has nothing to do with Texas' inspection policies, said Jerry Pacheco, executive director of the International Business Accelerator and president of the Border Industrial Association.

Driving to Houston on 45 last weekend, I was behind and passed a truck who had his front wheels on the right side of his lane and the back wheels of the trailer on the left line. His entire rig was side-riding the entire time. Worst I've ever seen and was completely unsafe for drivers in the lanes next to him.

I had not road tripped on IH-35 in about 15 years until this past weekend until we drove San Antonio to Dallas and back. I lost count of the rolling chicanes I passed with Laredo, TX painted on the doors. Those guys love to hang out in the right and center lane and impede the flow of traffic. That is if they stay in their lanes without swerving.
