The US supported Russia's opponent in Afghanistan, too. It ended up hurting us badly (9/11) and drawing us into an almost 20 year conflict that ended recently in disaster. Reflexively supporting Russia's foe or victim in this case may not be the best plan. It's certainly debatable.
Putting troops, esp female troops in Saudi to fight Iraq probable had more to do with 9/11 than Afghanistan.93MarineHorn said:

Walking away from Afghanistan didn't help, but look at it now even after a war and billions in reconstruction it's still in the hands of the Taliban.
The mistake after 9/11 wasn't going fully into Afghanistan, we half assed it then did the same thing in Iraq.
