This is a stupid meme. Unless you want to shift everything to a 7/7:30-4 workday and 6:00 prime time in CST. No one said the TWENTY-FOUR HOUR day actually gets longer. They mean the USEFUL HOURS OF DAYLIGHT as we now have or know them get longer.

If you want the sun shining in your window at 5:45am, move to Arizona. 5:45am is NOT useful to most people in terms of daylight.

This has nothing to do with government. If it weren't immensely popular a) we wouldn't be doing it and/or b) it wouldn't have grown in terms of number of days over the last 3 decades.

People that are against DST just make me shake my head in disbelief. I can understand not liking the time change twice a year, but the solution to that is DST year round.
