This is what has amazed me about this whole thing. Lots of hot takes that Russia or the US getting to decide what Ukraine does, but strikingly few recognizing that Ukraine, as a sovereign nation, has the right to determine the path it would like to pursue for itself, and it is not the place for either Russia or the US to make it for them.
No alleged promises or agreements made by other countries are binding on Ukraine (never mind that there is one way in which the US makes "promises", and that is by treaty; anything else is ephemeral and is subject to evaporation the minute a new administration is inaugurated).
