Facebook parent company Meta has announced it will be implementing a 'fact checking' service in its messaging platform WhatsApp, in order to counter so-called 'fake news' during the upcoming French presidential election.

Digital messaging service WhatsApp is launching a new 'fact checking' service implemented in France, according to an announcement made by the service's parent company, Meta.

The move is part of the company's efforts to tackle so-called 'fake news' during the upcoming French presidential election, with the Silicon Valley giant also announcing new anti-disinfo measures for its Instagram and Facebook platforms.

According to a post on the company's French-language website, a service allowing WhatsApp users to submit video, audio, and other content to so-called 'fact checkers' to be verified was launched on Thursday.

The service is being operated by Agence France-Presse, which Meta bills as the company's 'fact-checking partner'.

And we all know that "fact checking" means declaring anything which goes against the official globalist, communist narrative to be "disinformation."

And yes, they claim this is only for the upcoming French election, but anyone with a functional brain cell knows it won't stop there.

Isn't that a messaging app, like your phone's own text mssg app?

Why would that even be needed?

I have t seen a self titled fact checking organization that isn't in it for political spin and narrative policing.

Several years ago I was reading Erik Prince's deposition. He was asked about encryption apps such as Whats App. He laughed and said it was useless as encrypted communications and he would never use it. When asked why not he replied because it is not encrypted from the app itself. They retained the messages.

They're fact checking your "secure" messages.

That's not encryption.

This is terrible. Election interference, propaganda, indoctrination.

I'm not sure why any conservatives are still on Facebook. Never looked back when I got off November 2020.

Ya that service is already embedded in Texags and it's absolutely awful.

NPCs have been conditioned to be told what is truth by media and tech. To such an extent that they literally will now submit content and have some stranger, a nameless faceless corporate drone, give them permission to accept it as truth or not. They do not have the capacity to review content, and then come to their own conclusions based on their total sum of knowledge and experience. They instead delegate it to strangers at meta corp. and even worse, it's not even strangers they are delegating it to, it will be math algorithm, that is programmed by nameless faceless techies.

This could be an episode of the twilight zone or black mirror.

tl ; dr... nothing is secure.

What you are describing is the distinction between encryption in flight and encryption of static content.

SSL/TLS is used on 443 (https) to encrypt the transport of information between two places. VPNs work this way with encrypted tunnels. Once the content gets to its destination... how that device handles the information is almost completely independent of the transport. Most content is stored without encryption.

Most communication exchanges are Client-Server oriented through a proxy and are NOT peer-to-peer in the sense you talk directly to someone. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) can send directly to peers, but the Signaling is still proxied through a central controlling device.

When people use a mega proxy with encryption to hide their IP... there is some value. IMO, it is like rolling up your windows on a car. It will keep honest thieves out.

I believe WhatsApp is lClient-Server oriented and while the communication is encrypted from user to the WhatsApp server... it is unencrypted by WhatsApp... recorded and sent encrypted to its destination.

It is almost impossible to avoid the Client-Server architecture because most exchanges are between devices on private networks that get NAT'ed. Your local IP Address is likely a 192.168.x.y or 10.x.y.z, but if you go to myipaddress.com, you likely get something IPv4 and routable. Could be IPv6... but that is a distinction for another day.

No idea about whatsapp, but with Signal, nothing is stored by them. The data at rest is on the end devices. Thus, transport encryption is all that is needed unless the government gets your phone and your password.

So this means that the winners of the upcoming French elections are already determined.

Another stolen election to guide us toward the great reset to totalitarianism.

The only reasoning I've seen is that it basically gets you around some of the incompatibility between Android and Apple messaging and it's international in scope.

Facebook said they were going to read all your whatsapp. Why would any of you still be using it? Move to Signal already.

Also, assume that the 3 letter agencies are reading Signal as well, so just go talk to someone in person and cover your mouth. Use code words like they did in good fellas.

Remember the ad that started running showing the mailman reading your mail As he delivered it to you. Saying that unencrypted txt messages are the same thing. It was a what's app ad.

The bolded part is not correct. There is no in-transit decryption of messages. WhatsApp knows Alice is talking to Bob, but it does NOT know the content of that conversation.

Facebook is the worst offender in terms of data collection. They are absolutely reading and storing whatsapp messages, regardless of what they claim. They are also likely using the app to collect information on your phone like they do with the Facebook app.

Do you have evidence of any of this?

Security researchers tear apart apps like WhatsApp pretty thoroughly and there are no warnings of unencrypted messages being leaked.

Recently after they purchased whatsapp there were a number of articles written about it. They also released an updated terms of service. It was enough to cause me to delete my whatsapp that had tons of friends on it. Did some research at the time and switched to signal which was thought to be superior to telegram.

There is some contradicting info out there. Bottom line, Facebook needs user data to recoup their $16 Billion purchase. I do not trust that company to limit how much data they can scoop up even if they claim they are going to limit it.

Here's a fact for Facebook to check. Their stock has lost almost half its value in the last 6 months.

So the advantage of WhatsApp over normal texting is the ability to send texts internationally?

And there is "end-to-end encryption" so that your texts stay private? C'mon, it's owned by Facebook.
