I'm all for inclusion, but this doesn't seem the way to go about it.

On one hand, if she asked to be a model, it's hard to not want her to fulfill something she wants. On the other hand it feels like VS is trying to stay relevant now that "influencers" have rendered them pointless.

I'm a parent of a daughter with Down Syndrome.

I'm not abjectly against it. But, there's one reason and one reason only that this is happening. it's not about INCLUSION, it's about virtue signaling. Victoria's Secret wants positive publicity, plain and simple.
My wife has our daughter in the "modeling" circuit. She gets regular auditions and call backs, at a MUCH higher rate than a typically abled child her age would.

That said, kudos to the girl. She either got fortunate with here genes, or led a healthy lifestyle to get to that age without running into the weight problem that a vast majority of adults with DS struggle with.

Similar to the Adidas tweet from last week, the ad is doing exactly what Victoria's Secret wants it to do....

Plenty of free advertising.

Thanks for sharing! Just curious... not trying to sound creepy, but would you want your daughter modeling lingerie? I'm not in your shoes, but it seems like there's difference in 'normal' modeling and lingerie modeling.

If I had a daughter with DS (and I have friend that does) it would be pretty cool.

Considering the financial problems VS is facing the only question their management should be concerned with is " Is this ad going to increase sales ?"

If it's not, the people that made the decision should be fired for wasting time and resources.

Yes VS is trying to virtue signal but if this girl's dreams were to be a model then this is awesome. The fact that she is a girl with a nice body fits in with their old marketing.

She is obviously a beautiful young woman. Sure VS is doing this for virtue signaling. But for the young woman and her family you have to be happy for them she is realizing a dream come true and the her family had to work so hard to bring her to this point.

Downs children are loving, stubborn and crave more independence than they usually can handle usually due to too much trust of the world. This family did some things right and they are getting rewarded for it-- good for them.

I'm torn between being happy for this girl and also thinking this is a crassly using a young woman with a disability in order to promote themselves, not the young woman.

Thus is a horrible idea. It simply doesn't need to go to the under wear level. Victoria Secrets is about using sex to sell. If it wasn't there would be fat cows as models as well.

This is one of those classical cases where a simple No" is all that is needed. Where do we do from here? Spins bifida female models? How about a male who fancy himself as a female? Imagine that photo shoot.

Pretty sure VS already uses cows and trannies in the advertising. Where have you been?

I would feel okay about this if I knew that her developmental age was that of an adult.

At first glance this is taboo since those with down syndrome do have a mental disability and can be taken advantage of.

But this women is fit and if she has a sex drive and wants to feel sexy, why not use that to make money as a model like a typical female model?

I can't talk much about Down's Syndrome, but if those with it have sex drives and want to date and have sex and be intimate, then what's wrong with this.

I agree that they have just as much worth and value as average folks, and should be treated as "normal". In that case, this shouldn't be wrong.

The model has many Instagram posts showing her body and life, and was probably discovered that way. Who are we to tell her not to get a modeling job with VS?

I think VS took a big risk as this could backfire big time and cause backlash and boycotts.

Totally agree and this article has a lot more info about her life and career. More positive publicity for those with Down's Syndrome will help everyone love and appreciate them, including those that might chose abortion.

Jirau kickstarted her modeling career in Puerto Rico in 2019. The same year, she launched her own successful online fashion store, Alavett. (Alavett, or "I love it," is Jirau's favorite phrase, according to the site.)

In February 2020 just a month before the COVID-19 outbreak shut down the world Jirau made her debut at New York Fashion Week.

Her career continued to thrive during the pandemic, as she gained a large social media following. She created her own "No Limits" campaign in a bid to raise awareness about Down syndrome, which eventually caught the eye of Victoria's Secret execs.
