My first assignment in the USAF was as a B-52G copilot at Andersen AFB in Guam. I've flown all over Micronesia. All of the crewdogs in the 60 BMS lived atop Barrigada Heights overlooking the ocean.

We flew low level on NVGs across the Australian outback every three weeks during deployments to Darwin and we opened the SAC ops center at Diego Garcia. All of this was the kind of training we were doing back then for war that would come to the Middle East. We dropped tons of M117 and Mk82s, cleaning out the inventory stockpiles from Vietnam (and likely Korea too).

They closed the 60 BMS right before Desert Storm but most of us old conventional G-model guys got sent back to Diego via Guam (both ways) during the war and throughout the Saddam rule in the 1990s.

After 4 nights of low level NVG bombing in the B-52 over Iraq during the Storm, the commanders called it quits. Too much flak! We went back to high level bombing.

See Battle of Guadalcanal during WW2 as the importance. Japanese wanted an airbase to disrupt shipping and squeeze off Australia from the outside world.

I'm up to speed on my WWII history. This isn't 1945. There is no need for my tax dollars to be going to the South Pacific. Australia has done more than enough over the last decade to deserve whatever fate awaits them.
