This is absolutely it in a nutshell. If Schumer's voting rights legislation was so good for America and most people wanted it, no talk of overcoming a filibuster or changing the rules to eliminate it would exist because the legislation would be wanted and truly necessary.
This legislation to federalize certain rules around elections is being pushed by Dems because they know it ultimately benefits their chances of keeping power. That's it. They don't care a whit for "protecting democracy" or "voter rights", they want to memorialize into law the shenanigans that helped them win battleground states and the Georgia senator races.
In other words, write better legislation and don't waste time on partisan gaslighting to push a turd of a bill.
