A top meatpacker is halting sales of some pork products in California, in the first sign of fallout from the state's new law demanding more space on farms for the animals.

Seaboard Foods, the second-largest U.S. pig producer and fourth-biggest pork processor, confirmed the decision Friday in an emailed statement, blaming the state's Proposition 12 rule that goes into effect on Jan. 1.
Quote:

California voters approved the regulation, which advocates say will provide more humane conditions by allowing farm-raised pigs enough room to turn around. The move is a reaction to the widespread use of cages known as gestation crates that constrict the animals' movement.

Hog producers and pork producers have largely opposed the rule, arguing that costly renovations to farms will raise meat prices, at a time when they were already soaring and contributing to the highest food inflation in years.
Of course it was for that. In what universe did you think it was okay to post a naked man spreading open his butt cheeks on our platform?

Yeah these state specific laws need to start hurting Kalifornia instead of affecting the other 49 states. One net positive from their shrinking population.
Trump will fix it.

It's as if they are trying to run off low-income individuals to cause red states to swing blue..... On top of that, They are creating laws and protections of their elections to prevent the takeover of their old states as they fail even with insane policies that are clearly BSC.....

Wife loves it because i dont beatch about food.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't completely hate the new regulation. I haven't read through the details or anything so maybe I am just being naive, but it is really easy to turn a blind eye to some of the poor conditions we subject animals to. I do the carnivore diet quite often so I don't want to see higher meat prices, but some responsibility should be exercised.

To be honest, I do not know what good bacon is.
I hate it.

So, thru trial and error, and apparently buying this disgusting cheap bacon, I learned what to buy.

He's cute. He asks for so little. So I buy their bacon.

I work in the industry. Blind eyes are not turned to poor conditions from a macro level. It would cost producers money if poor conditions went rampant. Individual farms have issues for any number of reasons (typically **** employees), but if you have poor conditions for the animals, you'll create a stressing factor which will in turn create opportunities for disease and poor FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio (Amount of feed required to produce a pound of body weight)). Production within confined quarters is all based on keeping FCR low and getting the animals to that point as quickly as possible w/o issue. CA wrote a proposition for a problem that didn't exist and now they will pay for it.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that and be willing to pay the accordingly higher meat prices. If that's the trade off we want to make as a society, fine.

The problem is the vast majority of these people who want to give better conditions to the pigs would never actually vote for it if they thought they'd have to pay $10 instead of $5 for bacon. They're voting for something because of feelz with no awareness of the consequence, and then they go whine about capitalism when the consequence hits them in the wallet.

The REAL underlying problem is that Kalifornia and states like them that create cost increasing mandates don't really feel the pain because national companies tend to distribute that cost across their customer base. Meaning everyone pays for Kalifornia's fantastical whims.

The pork industry is doing the right thing and others should follow this example. Make those who want these policies suffer the consequences exclusively.

Problems are fungibility and bottle necks. Those who don't retrofit their hog houses will compete for a smaller market through the same packing plants. Just like "free range" and "organic" require unique infrastructure, this requirement will cost farmers more and as the market forces react to a new fracture there will be rebalancing pains.

Homer: Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. Lisa, honey, are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad! Those all come from the same animal!
Homer: [Chuckles] Yeah, right Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal.

They ARE wonderful, magical animals. Who doesn't like all of the above? I'm making pinto beans right now with a pound and a half of bacon in the crockpot. The bestest and mostest tastiest food EVAR!

Wonder why just some pork products?

California should look at the farm conditions for some pork byproducts
  • Gelatin used in a wide variety of products(gelatin is used in certain beer, wines and fruit juices to absorb the natural cloudiness of the beverages.)
  • Skincare products(Everyday daily hygiene products also contain pork glycerin, including toothpaste, shampoo, soaps and lotions.)
  • Paint brushes(For practical uses, pig hair is used for bristles in inexpensive paintbrushes and is processed and added to some fertilizers.) wonder if Hunter uses these?
  • Glycerine used in foods and numerous other products.
I think we should let the Gov know.
