They were "supposed" to seize Kiev in days. Now they're retreating. So yeah the fuel and food may have been a thing.

This is American disinformation. Seizing Kiev was not part of the maneuver warfare that Russia is engaged in. If you seize cities, you sideline those forces to garrison a city. It's a terrible strategy.

The first order of importance is defeating or forcing surrender of Uke military. What's spectacular about this is the Uke force is 260k, the Russians brought 200k. Usually you need a 3:1 to overwhelm, yet Russia didnt even bring 1:1. Yet Russia is defeating the superior force through thier execution of maneuver warfare.

Kiev has what 3mil people? The amount of troops to garrison a city that large would be roughly 400k. So if you need that many and you only brought 200k across ALL of Ukraine, explain how capturing Kiev was even on Russias tactical goals?

Kiev was a feint. It forces Uke to divert resources to defense of the capital, meaning they arent in the Donbass fighting. If you can send 10k russians to tease kiev and Zelensky allocates 50k to kiev, the 260k/200k margin disappears.

Iraq 2003(invasion, not insurgency). We came in with 309k total from the coalition. Iraq had 375k. Baghdad had a population of 5 million+. Putin thought Russia was just as good as the US, so why shouldn't they be able to pull off a quick strike and topple zelensky? Especially if the population is supposed to cheer you and welcome you with flowers?

Iraq had a population of 25mil, we brought 309k.
Ukraine has a population of 42mil, russia brings

These are not comparable. So again if Russia thought to emulate Iraq, they had fewer troops and more population to manage. AGAIN, FOR THE CHEAP SEATS, TAKING CITIES WAS NEITHER POSSIBLE NOR DESIRED. From Day 2 rubio was tweeting the intention to engage in "medieval style seiges" meaning cut supplies and starve em.

You guys are going to be in for a rude awakening after these talks are over. Ukraine is already willing to concede NATO membership, no foreign weapons, and relinquishing of crimea and donbass...and all 48 hours after the Ukrainian military in the donestk gets beheaded.

Have you not seen Zelensky say every day for the last week that there will be no territorial concessions? No?

And "no foreign weapons" means no weapons under foreign control. Ukraine will have full military security guarantees outside of NATO and be armed to the teeth with the best that UK and US can provide.

Even IF they got Donbas and Crimea then it's a monumental failure based on the damage they'll have inflicted on themselves, all for territory that they largely already held anyway. Seems like a monumentally stupid strategy if that's the planned end game. Inconceivably dumb.
and Russia was taunted into this with the bio labs and NATO training next to Russia border.

  • Ukraine's president said two SBU officials had been removed from their roles and stripped of their titles.
  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy described them as "traitors" and "antiheroes."
  • It marked a rare moment of internal conflict in Ukraine's military command since the Russian invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had fired two top Ukrainian security officials whom he accused of being "traitors."

In a late-night address on Thursday night, Zelenskyy said that the chief of Main Department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Andriy Olehovych Naumov , and the head of the SBU in Kherson, Serhiy Oleksandrovych Kryvoruchko, had been removed from their positions and stripped of their titles.
He described the officials as "antiheroes" and said: "Now I do not have time to deal with all the traitors. But gradually they will all be punished."

"Those servicemen among senior officers who have not decided where their homeland is, who violate the military oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people as regards the protection of our state, its freedom and independence, will inevitably be deprived of senior military ranks," he said ."Random generals don't belong here!"

I promise everyone, life would be a LOT smoother and carefree if you don't engage the shills and the slack jawed low brows. And those are in general terms, staff.

Plus, it keeps them out of the eyes of those who already blocked them when you don't quote them. A courtesy really.

Just a PSA.

A CNN commentator described Ukraine's attack on the fuel dump in Belgorod - a valid military target - as "Biden's worst nightmare".

Did he say why?

I assume it is because of escalation and what russia might do since "it was wronged by an attack on civilians /s" and that it might get Biden closer to having to make the decision he has been half assing. But wondering why he said that.

The commentator thought it would push Russia closer to using nukes.

Then the commentator is pretty dumb.

If that is all it takes, then the decision has pretty much already been made and they were waiting for an excuse.

Yep. If the sole justification for Putin's use of nukes is "we're losing" then the only alternative to that is constant unilateral surrender.

As Reagan once said, and I paraphrase, "there's only one way to guarantee peace, and you can have it in the next second. That's surrender." He, of course, went on to argue for the virtue of fighting for freedom instead of appeasement in the interest of "peace", which has always been a liberal principle.

interesting discussion would be:

what happens to all the civilians in Ukraine who lived in the areas that were occupied by the Ivans?

Their cars are destroyed, their houses are destroyed, their businesses are destroyed.

I doubt they can just log into Fidelity and access a brokerage account- the vast majority probably just had their savings in a local bank- which is now blown up.

so if you are 52 years old, what the heck do you do now that you are penniless and have one suitcase to your name?

Ukrainian government has announced that they will be disseminating funds to individuals in order to assist with reconstruction. Apparently they're already screening applications from those able to submit but I'm sure that dispersement won't happen until the war is definitively over. Unfortunately a lot of these folks become penniless refugees and move to a shelter in some western Ukrainian city/town, move in with friends/relatives, or head out of country to a refugee camp. It's hell.

It's why you've seen massive squalid tent cities crop up on international borders in third world countries when other wars erupt. Lots of folks with nothing, and nowhere to go.

When I posted the link to Bank of Ukraine for donation I wondered if it was a good place due to this concern. Still do.

Charities typically have 10% overhead, so you lose some there too.

For military donation I hope this allows them to buy more weapons in the market. For humanitarian hopefully they get it where it needs to go.

Sadly, I agree. There is not anyone, much less a ton of people who can oversee the rebuilding of Ukraine type of fund that will be competent. Iraq and Afghanistan proved that.

Maybe if the Poles and other former Soviet controlled states are in charge?

Better yet, just send Walmart and Waffle House folks.
