Russia's financial system is collapsing. They will not be able to weather that for very long. The average Russian will not be feed themselves in the near future and that may trigger regime change in the Kremlin.

Putin has made Russia a pariah state in just a few weeks. Europe will not trust Russia for at least a generation after this event.
The fact that Putin had built up a $600 billion war chest in anticipation of more sanctions means he believed he had already seen everything we could throw at him and had calculated how much it would take to prevail.

He.was.wrong.

This, we need to sanction and cutoff all the oligarchs from their money now. At this point backing out of Ukrainian territory is not enough, only the handing over or removal of putin should these financial measures be removed

"Under the new sanctions, PM Johnson has announced that the UK's subsequent round of sanctions include:
Isolating and removing essential Russian businesses from operating within the British financial sector, the largest financial sector in Europe;
A freeze on all Russian bank assets in the United Kingdom;
A new swathe of export controls placed upon Russian industry, including the cessation of trade for dual-use products; and
Seizing hundreds of billions of pounds in assets from Russian oligarchs, with an estimated 100 individuals and businesses having their assets frozen as well as the establishment of a new financial enforcement agency to find hidden assets in the UK."

Nor will Russian supported states such as Syria, Iran and Cuba. When the money spigot dries up, what will they do?

Think you are overestimating how much support china would be willing to give. China is concerned of the same thing happening to them

Great article on the financial sanctions. I wasn't aware that we were also able to cut Putin off from the $600B he touted as Russia's "war chest" which would allow it to weather any Western sanctions.

"The new banking restrictions are arguably the most serious form of economic retaliation yet approved by the Western powers in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine. They are aimed at preventing Putin from using his sizable financial reserves totaling more than $600 billion to stabilize the Russian economy in the face of other sanctions and economic measures imposed by the West."

Nato is playing this brilliantly so far.
Led by the USA.
and in turn, led by the Biden Administration. Say what you will about Afghanistan and a million other stupid decisions but if we come out of this with a broken Russia and a China seeing what could happen it will be a major win. Lots of chapters left to write though.
Yep, I can imagine Xi and the CCP taking a look at these sanctions and saying "holy ****, let's rethink this".

Scrolled and screen shotted to read some of this. Basically, Biden didn't think the threat of sanctions was going to do anything, by his own admission, and cut himself off at the knees by declaring military options essentially off the table and/or refusing to explicitly state they were possible. The question posed was about why make those threats if they're not going to do anything, and Biden's response has basically been that Russia needs to feel the actual sanctions and this takes time. That's bull**** considering what they're doing right now, and Biden's approach had magically been one big *** mistake after another.

The United States still has the largest GDP of any nation. Now China is 2nd but that is mostly an illusion based on what we know about their financial system.

The reality is Europe is dependent on Russia for energy and Biden decided to make the US go from exporter to importer so we can't help. TRussia can hold out a lot longer than the Europeans can and they were prepared, Europe is not.

Here is a breakdown by Zeihan that explains just a few of the things that Russia supplies.

It does appear NATO and other EU countries are stepping up. Exactly as they should. The US should not take point on this. There is always the case that Putin may go completely rogue. The comment posted earlier that if Russia thinks there will be a world without Russia, then there won't be a world period. That is the worst case possible.

In this event, we should hope for change from within Russia. The major problem is, there has to be an off ramp to make that happen, and if the Russian brass doesn't see one, then we have major issues. If they're attacking because they seriously don't believe they have a future, then I hope we're not already past the point of no return.

You really imagine it's that simple? Many forces are at play here, beyond the obvious Putin attack on Ukraine, and so much we will never know once this has passed. Hopefully the world does not fall deeper into the grip and whims of those who seek to control it, but then again, we have seen over the past decade how full of sheep America is...

The US is the #2 exporter of LNG in the world. By the end of this year it will be the #1 exporter. A lot of it is already going to bail Europe out with more to come.

Russia cannot hold out anymore. They've been cutoff from their cash reserves and the western banking system. For sure Europe has a gas supply problem now but Russia is toast financially.

Not sure how this will all play out but Russia is in no position to make demands anymore.

I think it depends on how you calculate GDP, in some cases China measures higher, but the US and China are neck-and-neck. My main point though is, Russia has a very power economic friend to turn to that isn't following along with these wholesale financial sanctions

I think Biden is letting his team of experts handle this. Which is what any president should do honestly. He's doing a good job. And I'm not a fan of Biden.
