They don't care about their population, in general. The only people Putin cares about are his inner circle, the FSB branch, and the small civil servant class.

Making the population poorer is not going to change the equation here unless the population is allowed to know why it is happening. The vast majority of Russians don't even know Russia invaded Ukraine. They are being told by media outlets it was a "peacekeeping" mission, just in the breakaway regions, and the pesky Ukrainians are killing civilians. They are being told the West put sanctions on Russia because they are evil, lying, nazis.

Another hospital hit

I think Ukraine will fall, but it's in the interest of NATO to make it as painful and as drawn out for Russia as possible by supplying Ukraine with weapons and intelligence. Honestly it may not be in Ukrainian or NATO interest if it leads to escalation of violence and additional senseless death. Beyond that, NATO shouldn't engage Russia over Ukraine. Not where NATO should draw the line in my opinion.

I do wonder at what point Russian aggression may be recognized as genocide if they do bombard the civilians.
