Interesting sidenote. The Navy/USMC very recently decided to address this very problem. Age and rank waivers are being rethought for exactly this reason. People with critical skills are desperately needed across the board and there are ways to get them into the ranks but it takes a LOT of red tape and case by case examination and is pretty rare. The brass is looking at ways to streamline the process, forgo/redo age requirements and get them into appropriate rank fitting their skillset.

For a tiny service like the USMC, this is LONG overdue IMO.
