Right.....

American Airlines cancels hundreds of flights due to "bad weather"

American Airlines has canceled nearly 700 flights so far Sunday, adding to more than 1,000 already called off as the airline struggled to recover from slowed operations caused by weather on Thursday and Friday.

Nearly a quarter of the mainline operations for the Fort Worth-based carrier were sidelined Sunday after major cancellations on Friday and Saturday were blamed on bad weather as far back as Thursday, when high winds in North Texas closed runways for periods at the airline's biggest hub, DFW International Airport.

Cancellations then piled up on Friday and Saturday as pilots and flight attendants impacted by Thursday weather began to run up against federal rules on hours worked and rest for airline crew members.

"We are taking this measure to minimize any inconvenience as much as possible," American Airlines chief operating officer David Seymour said Saturday in a memo to employees. "Most of the customers impacted by these changes are being rebooked the same day, and we apologize for having to make these changes."

Nearly 100,000 American Airlines passengers were affected by Sunday's slowdown. About 80,000 were inconvenienced on Saturday.

There were high winds Thursday, but canceling on Friday and Saturday seems odd.

it is amazing how ****ty lower 48 airlines cancel flights because a seagull somewhere farted, but Alaska Airlines pilots fly through some of the nastiest **** imaginable, and yet somehow seem to keep their operations going almost all the time.

also, we know this is really all about FJB... so....

Weather that really impacts flights is stuff like thunderstorms, hurricanes, blizzards, or as claimed in this case, high winds. Alaska's operation is mostly the PNW, and California where severe weather is pretty rare.

I looked and see nothing about Southwest canceling flights the last 3 days. They both operate out of the dfw area.

Southwest cancelled 5% so far today which is pretty bad but not like AA

1. There was no really really harsh weather in the lower 48 the two days quoted. This was about staffing and mgmt incompetence.

2. As to your most ridiculous point - Alaska Airlines does a ****-ton of flights to Alaska daily. Pilots do rotations onto those routes and the weather there for half the year can easily be worse than the vast majority of thunderstorms.

And the PNW gets incredible wind storms, blizzards in the Plains, and lots of high-altitude drama because of the impacts of the mountain ranges.

Yes, the issue is staffing.

Alaska operates the vast majority of its network out of the PNW and California where severe weather is very rare. There's a reason Hawaiian does well with this metric as well. Nobody operates a "**** ton" of flights to Alaska because it's a small market.

We did have really high winds on Friday and Saturday here in Dallas, but SWA did not experience cancellations at LUV like AA did at DFW.

Would tell you this is more of a staffing issue than the wind unless the wind patterns changed dramatically in the 20 miles between them.

I have one friend in my circle who is a Jenny McCarthy level anti-vaxxer.
She's been on the holistic medicine and natural remedies for years.

It's kind of funny that she and I are now aligned in being against the jab for the Vid mandates.

But what's even funnier is that she is stuck in Mexico today because AA cancelled her flight. I mean, it's kind of ironic that a major anti-vaxxer wouldn't be able to get home from her vacation due to an immunization issue that has nothing to do with herself.

"Bad weather" is now lingo for "bad management"?

We're in Cancun right now waiting on our flight back to Houston through United which is running on time. We were at a music event this week where, magically, many of our friends who were flying American got cancelled. American apparently has planes that are not able to withstand certain weather events that other airlines can handle, I guess (if they are to be believed).

This glitch was ignored as well

There is a small war going on behind the scenes, and AA is simply hoping they can lie, and hide long enough that the American people will just forget & move on from all this imo.

My AA flight was delayed last week, due to IT problems at Skywest as well (1 day after it happened). Too many people flying too few flight crews and airplanes. Perhaps AA should stop at 90% occupancy or get its act together.

I don't know anything about the flight cancellations, but it was windy as hell at my house all day and night on both Thursday and Friday. I can't remember ever having such strong wind last that long.

DFW has 7 runways. They were down to 2 for most of Thursday using the two outer runways that run northwest to SouthEast instead of the 5 parallel North and South runways. They were also doing that Friday but not most of the day like Thursday. It was a huge traffic jam on the runways Thursday.

LUV by default has the northwest Southeast runways so wouldn't expect operation issues for them.

DFW airport had to shift operations to the crosswind runways (i.e. 31R and 31L). That is a big impact to operations since they go from four parallel runways to two and taxi distances go way up.

DAL was less impacted because it's runways are already oriented the same as DFWs cross-wind runways. They share the same 31R and 31L designation. It was just another norm day at DAL.

You can go watch this on FlightRadar24. It's entirely rational why DFW took a harder hit than DAL.

Shhh! Facts about the situation should be ignored. Sounds like the same people that complain that their plane isn't taking off due to weather at the destination or for the connecting flight, "But it's sunny here!".

I was stranded at DFW Friday night. No ground crew to meet us at the gate, waited 25 min. Missed connection, no hotel rooms within 20 miles. Spent the night with hundreds at DFW. Back at DFW today. Customer service line in terminal A is better than 100 yards long.

How stupid does American Airlines think we are ? 600 cancellations over the weekend out of DFW due to "weather "what a joke, the weather here was great.

I absolutely love how the vaccination mandate is starting to kick and bite these companies in the ass

I flew back to Dallas from Atlanta on American on Friday flight was delayed for over an hour because of a lack of a flight attendant you have to have a minimum amount of flight attendants for FAA regulations and they had to search for one I'm sure the flight attendant that was supposed to be on my flight was protesting the vaccine mandate but they came across the intercom and said that they came down sick all of a sudden

I flew AA last weekend and my pilot apologized before he read off the standard mask nonsense and said they were all tired of it but were forced to keep doing it. So I imagine a lot of them are tired of this crap.
