Do Frats do anything but haze and sexually assault girls? Do they honestly serve a purpose other than to get kids together and party?

From what I can tell, sororities actually do some good. I can't figure out any good that comes from fraternities.

There are decent frats - but those are the exception, not the rule.

Tell me again why you want to be friends with a jackhole that requires you driving them around at all hours of the night, makes you do stupid crap like drink yourself to death, etc...

SAE...I had a roommate join those guys like the year after they had a pledge die at tu from drunkenly falling off a balcony and the tamu chapter was on probation for nearly killing one or something like that. Somewhere around 06 or 07 I think. All I could say was... "dude...really?"

Just join a "men's organization". You get all the mixers without all the hazing and hierarchy crap. They're required to do a lot of charity work, similar to a frat.

I'm an old, but my son is in one and it seems like a great deal. They focus on bringing in entrepreneurs to speak to them and learning about businesses/networking.

You just can't pour corrosive liquid on kids and burn their skin to the point that they are permanently disfigured. F those guys that really is crossing the line! They should file criminal charges as well.

To be fair SAE kinda has a rep for this at A&M
The rest of the frats haze but mostly just the light hearted hazing like drive me around, clean the chapter house etc. not physical pain or crap like that

Mine raised tens of thousands of dollars for Phoebe's Home domestic shelter in Bryan and created friendships that I still maintain 20 years later. Other than that, nothing, I guess.

You drive actives around for 1 semester for their safety… and then you get that from pledges for THE REST OF YOUR COLLEGE CAREER.

Sounds like a good deal to me. And it's generally only 1 night a week you drive.

All of that stuff happens in the Corps too.

No that's taking advantage of stupid kids. Much better to make them walk home and have cops arrest them for public intoxication.

Per its MSDS, SC-200 has a pH of 13.3-14. What something like this is doing in a frat house is beyond me. Obviously, it could cause the burns like are alleged in the complaint, and if the allegations are true, then I would think assault or similar charges (meaning criminal) would be appropriate.

Having said that, there are very safe bond-building activities* that fraternal organizations do engage in that build trust and character in their new members. So long as these activities are undertaken at-will, I do not believe its anybody else's business what activities private organizations engage in.

*consumption of alcohol is not one of these activities.

SAE is like this at every university. They were the ones doing racist chants at OU and Ole Miss. They constantly get their charters shut down or suspended at different universities every year.

Kind of like military and male based groups have done for centuries, perhaps millennia???

Pledges are hazed, no doubt, but extreme incidents are very rare and it builds camaraderie among that pledge group.

The stories of them forcing kids to drink extreme amounts are the rare exception. And this story is just flat out bat sh** crazy. You can't even torture terrorists like this.

People can say "rent a friend, join a frat" all they want, but such types of organizations date FAR FAR back. And most of my buddies who were in fraternities are still close with a solid contingent of their fraternity brothers to this day, 17-18 years removed from school at A&M. I have witnessed the networking benefits too...and like many other organizations, they often times do groom people to have a leg up socially when entering the real world. It's not all just partying, but that's a big part of it. And typically with each party they are raising money for a good cause.

I wasn't in one, but quite a few of my best friends were, and they are hardcore conservative God fearing patriots and good family men. Just like almost all of the corps guys I know. Crazy how similar they all turned out actually.

And how showing Jackie Sherrill the hazing they went through led to the creation of the 12th man kickoff team.

I loved my fraternity experience. You pool money to throw big parties. Made life long friends, while also focusing on community service. Also learned about Robert's rules of order, and delegation of duties.

It's not for everyone but it's an awesome college experience

What's the percentage of students in Greek life these days at A&M? Was really just starting to grow when I was there.

Just taking my son to visit colleges these days, he's not the frat type so its not really a consideration for us but its crazy how some schools like Ole Miss are insanely Greek.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's less than 10% for guys. Sororities are around 20-25%.

As someone mentioned above, the sororities seem to have their **** together. Organized, actually do legit philanthropy, etc. The frats are more of a circlejerk. The average GPAs are somewhat telling too. Sororities average around 3.5. Knock off a solid half point for the frats
