It's the same reason tvs and lasic are less expensive... Technology and efficiency improvements.

If McDonald's still made big Macs the way they did in the 70s theyd probably be $10+

I've never had a bratwurst sandwich before, that is going to change though.

Well, in this context sandwich could also mean a tortilla wrap, Duddleys survival kit for example. Mustard on fish, hard no.

I'm sure almost all goods are cheaper now than they were in 1972...almost entirely due to capitalism.

Due to no gold standard backing the dollar and products becoming less expensively produced by shifting standards lower and cutting costs [including technological advancements], not because of capitalism. Companies need more money flowing through so made more addictive products and lower lasting products

I remember watching a video about junk food and satiated. Products being designed to essentially dissolve before triggering release of natural satiation chemicals, resulting in higher consumption per sitting...

They used real beef for one

I don't know what you think they use, but they actually do use 100% beef.

They just aren't telling you which part of the cow it is.

Exactly, and honestly I don't want to know.
If my memory serves ... McDonalds used to use 1/2 lamb & 1/2 beef on their patties or something like that.
The the 100% beef folks came in and forced McD's to change.

Would be interesting know when that happened.

Back when I worked there in the mid-90s, they were all beef.

A good friend of one of my uncle's even worked at the meat packing plant that slaughtered the cows and processed them for McD's. He was fairly impressed with the quality chosen at that time.

Big Mac prices will definitely climb in the next 12 months as reality/supply chain problem and federal energy policy seizes McDonalds like your Labrador sensing a sudden attraction for your shoe.

Just ate lunch at Denny's in Boerne.

No beef other than hamburger.

No noodles or spaghetti.

Fast food is getting expensive.

Chick-fil-A Grilled chicken sandwich is now $5.35 and 12 count nuggets are $5.70. Throw in tax a combo is about $10.

I remember $5 was all used for lunch.
No more $5 dollar footlong commercials from Subway either.
Hell, Arby's used to have $5 for 5 sandwiches in the late 1980s. College survival food.

The first couple of winters here, you could get a hamburger, a cheeseburger, or a McChicken for yesterday's high.

Even I was tempted by the idea of 3 cent McChickens, sans mayo of course

Big macs are as good as gold. They last forever, don't believe me just look at the one in Icelandhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/61439/icelands-last-mcdonalds-burger-finally-moved-national-museum . Buy'em and keep as a hedge against inflation. And if things go really south you can eat them, try doing that with a gold coin!

Never had it, picture looks good. The Denny's here is really pretty good. Hamburgers about as good as a burger can get.

And when my '84 wife and I enter we usually lower the average age.

My question is, what's changed in the recipe of the big Mac?
Whats the nutritional content then and now?
Where are the ingredients sourced then and now?

I imagine the cost to produce big Mac has dramatically decreased as have the nutritional content, as empty calorically and nutritionally perhaps more so than the backing of the USD since 71.
The Big Mac Index has been a favorite of The Economist magazine for a long time.

I rarely see an issue now, but they used to have a periodic comparison (annually, I think) of the prices of the Big Mac in a number of various countries around the world.

Iceland was my first stop when I did the Gen X right of passage and backpacked thru Europe.

My friend explained why were given so many McDonald's coupons upon arrival.

Icelanders would not eat there.

They did like Dairy Queen though

It is a great tool for thinking about purchase power parity. You know, exchange rates. How much is a Big Mac in Tokyo compared to NYC.

It is 100% useless as a tool to measure inflation.

Why not just use the personal computer, 1975 compared to 2021? Or, how about cellular phones?

The Big Mac has changed.

If you want a better measure of inflation, look at the price of the ingredients. Commodities stay pretty much the same over time.

McDonald's would rather the pricing stay close to same and make profit by cutting costs, bigger bread less meat cheaper meat or fake meat, and they'll say they're saving the planet by becoming greener and get some of that ESG monies at the same time.

Requirements of McDonalds are completely different in countries they haven't created an addicted populace yet. Addict someone to mcd's then lower the quality as you have a captive audience. Profit.

Big Mac in the 70's vs Today

So take the number of Big Macs you can buy today and divide by 2.

11,000/year in the 70's and 6200/year (in 1970 size i.e. you need to buy 2 BM to equal 1970 sized Big Mac) today.
