For those who don't know, Lionel Messi is the GOAT soccer player and today he broke Pele's record for most goals in international play by a South American man (aka player that is worth a damn). Yet in ESPN's article about it, they say:

Quote:

Messi trails Brazilian duo Marta (109) and Cristiane (96) for the overall record for most goals scored by any South American player at the international level.

As if any woman could pretend to be in same galaxy as any professional male player, let alone Messi.

Just wanted to provide a laugh to /16. You are welcome.

Messi could identify as a woman and the record would be all his. Hers. Whatever.

ESPN's mistake, like most people's, is to pretend that the women's version of a sport is the same sport as the men's. Women's soccer is not the same game men's soccer. The same is true for basketball and volleyball. Two versions of similar looking games. It is like comparing Spades and Hearts.
***It's your money, not theIRS! (At least for a little while longer.)

There is an award called the Ballon d'Or. It is like the global Heisman for soccer. It has been awarded on the men's side since 1956. Messi has won it a record 6 times and is on track to win #7.

On the women side, they have only awarded it since 2018. Nobody gives a crap about it. Purple haired guy won the 2nd one even though it's pretty clear she didn't deserve it. The award itself and her win in particular is political, plain and simple.

So while she may be in the top 50 female players, she is probably only in the top 4 billion overall.

Not to necessarily nitpick or derail the conversation, but Carli Lloyd won it in 2015 following the World Cup

You sure?

I (like the rest of the world) couldn't care less about the female Ballon Dor. I had to look it up on wikipedia.

For fun, I looked up videos the top 10 goals for Rapinhoe:

and Messi (first video was blocked.. so here is another of top 25 Edit: well crap.. I guess all his videos are blocked when you embed them):

And BTW (according to wikipedia), Rapinhoe is 36 and only has a total of 120 goals for club and country in a total of 365 appearances. Messi is 34 and has 711 goals in 884 appearances. So it was a lot harder to pick out the top 10 of his goals than hers.

Truly the Michael Jordan of soccer. Even great soccer players call him an alien, there's never been anything like him.
