Update (1302ET): Moments ago, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards spoke with reporters at a press conference. He said following Hurricane Ida, it may take upwards of 30 days to restore power to parts of the state. He said he wasn't "satisfied" with the timeline to restore power, adding that the situation is very dangerous, and requested that those who evacuated don't return home.

Energy provider Entergy Corp has been surveying the damage since Monday and has found 207 transmission lines spanning more than 2,000 miles have been knocked out by the storm, according to WSJ.

Rod West, Entergy's group president of utility operations, said drones, helicopters, and land-based vehicles are surveying the damage and estimate it could take at least three weeks to restore power.

These things generally have attention grabbing headlines but usually correct themselves sooner rather than later.
The folks at the microphone are saying 3-4 weeks.

Let's play the over under game...

1) Time to restore 80% electricity - over or under 3 weeks
2) Wide spread looting - over or under 3 days (we know theres already small scale, this is a city wide prediction)
3) 1st reference for the Biden Admin blaiming Trump - over or under 1 week
4) 1st MSM press calling residents "climate change refugees" - over or under 1 week
5) 1st call for additional emergency money beyond what's already proposed in the infrastructure bill - over or under 1 week

Based on some of the high voltage towers I saw laying on the ground, I don't think they're too far off on that timing.

Over 3 weeks on number 1.

No widespread looting because this is a completely different situation than Katrina.

Over 1 week on blaming Trump from the actual administration. Plenty of others will.

While climate change will be mentioned, I doubt the particular words climate change refugee will be strung together.

They will request more money immediately, if not sooner.

My mom lives out on Copano and it took a little while after Harvey for them to install then string up poles. Transformers and such, then testing. It was very heartwarming to see the hundreds of different electrical trucks from all over working their asses off and I would imagine this will be more infrastructure reinstall needed. 4 weeks will be pushing it to get 80% but highly depends on how many resources and equipment can get there to off set.

Looting? There were sketchy people around pretty quickly and still needed a lot of visibility from DPS, constables, sheriffs, BP, etc. I'm thinking pretty high looting potential.

Also after Katrina, a lot of NOLA police officers had to leave to take care of their families.

We just need China to build a few extra windmills using their coal plants, to replace those that were lost.

Then, ship them to America on sailboats... install them... wait for the next wind to blow... and then turn the lights on.

Good thing we turned the Afghanistan Lithium mines over to China.

Easy-Peasy
Just don't route the damn blades through LULING.

Meh, PMSNBC will not care about LA.
Wrong LA.

Looting not too widespread yet.
Looting wet toilet paper is tough.

We got our power back last night (Baton Rouge area). The Rouse's parking lot near us had around 100 or so energy trucks, so there is a lot of help coming.

Poles are not that big of a deal. Especially considering they come from LA and MS. Transmission towers on the other hand.

Our Rockport (key allegro) house took nearly 3 weeks for electricity to come back after Harvey.

It took 17 days for my parents to get power back after Ike. There was major damage to the neighborhood substation and it pretty much had to be rebuilt. Considering NOLA lost whole transmission lines, I'm not quite sure why 30 days is a shock.

In Zachary, 20 miles north of Baton Rouge. Livingston is a good bit further east and did not get the "west side is the best side" like we did. Still the first time I was actually scared for a bit during a hurricane.

Anyone in the market for a generator over there? I might be willing to buy and sell a few to them, but only at a significant mark up. Otherwise, not worth the trip.

As of the last I heard, there were numerous towers like this one knocked down.

Just assume they started yesterday on excavating, setting formwork, and pouring new concrete footing foundations to rebuild just the singular tower here. You're looking at 3 weeks of work before they even get to erect steel girder #1.

It will be months before everyone has power again.

The Hubs has a friend who worked in emergency management in the Army Reserves. He was staying with us both before and after Ike. He was incredibly frustrated with one electric company he had to work with. He said he couldn't reveal the name but I just looked at him and said "Entergy, right? Out of Louisiana?" He nodded and asked how I knew that.

"Reading message boards," I replied.

In my own little neck of the woods, people are either on a co-op or Entergy. Guess whose power stays on while the other goes out? The co-op. We only briefly lost power for about half an hour throughout the snowstorm this year. That was it.

I fully expect family in Harvey to give up and drive here soon (assuming they can get out). Additionally family much closer in Baton Rouge so they may get the majority. We'll wait and see.

Bravo!!
We have CPS Energy, govt owned.
They told us to conserve power while their HQ was up bright during the snowstorm.
Their CEO was not fired because she is black.

Alicia hit Houston at the beginning of my senior year in high school in August 1983.

We got our power back on my street in our neighborhood after about four days but there were some other people just a few streets up but it took 3 1/2 weeks. This is nothing new it's unfortunate for the people without it though.
Currently a happy listless vessel and deplorable. #FDEMS TRUMP 2024.

My cousin lived in Ocean Spring MS, during Katrina. New Orleans got the focus due to the flooding but, the Mississippi Coast was hit hard. It took my other cousin about a week to get there from Florida with a generator and supplies because the brides, and roads were out and no gas anywhere. The Florida cousin had to carry gas with him. One he got there my MS cousin was sitting there in his damaged house with his shotgun, to keep the looters away. He had his fishing boat at his house so had a pretty good supply of gas to run the generator but was basically out of food and water. Fortunately he had a large supply of wine, lol It was at least a month before he had electricity.

New Orleans Mayor Orders Citywide Curfew To Prevent Mass Looting

Update (1856ET): New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson held a press conference Tuesday afternoon at City Hall regarding a citywide curfew to deter mass looting and an update on the power situation.

Cantrell told reporters, effective immediately (8 pm local time), a citywide curfew will be enforced until 6 am Wednesday. New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has deployed an anti-looting task force with National Guard members to protect business districts.

Several accounts on social media show people looting businesses after Hurricane Ida knocked out power to the city and surrounding areas in Southeast Louisiana. PowerOutage.US reports more than a million people are still without power in the state.

Just an overnight curfew. Hopefully the line crews will make some progress before the weekend.
