At 8 am this morning, I heard a radio report that a Taliban spokesperson told the press it had given intel to the US of a non specific threat that ISIS was going to carry out to discredit the Taliban. Sounds like this is it.

After they had WON? That's the essential thing here. A suicide bomber is actually a valuable resource for an entity to have at their disposal. You use them for turning tides or sending message --- victories by nature everyone wants to bathe in it.

On the other hand, some of the usual suspects of Syria front would make more sense.

Because there are factions in Afghanistan that hate the US more than they want to run the country. AQ, ISIS, et al do not care about helping the Taliban when they see easy targets.

This actually makes sense.

There was absolutely no reason for a member or ally of the Taliban to initiate this. If we had a functioning President, this would 180 our direction immediately.

You can't think from the rational perspective of oh they are in control how could they persuade someone to do this. They could grab a guy and tell him they will rape his family to death if he doesn't go do it. They could kidnap a handicap person. They could get a "true believer" that thinks death will give him 72 virgins. They aren't constrained by your morals or beliefs so try not to project those on to them.
