'Candy Man' Dean Corll was shot dead 48 years ago. Texas EquuSearch will soon begin searching for the remains of any additional victims
48 years ago, Dean Corll, one of the country's most prolific serial killers, was shot dead at his home in Pasadena, Texas.

Texas EquuSearch announced Sunday it will soon begin searching for the remains of any additional victims.

Between 1970 and 1973, Dean Corll, murdered at least 28 young boys in the Houston area. The killings were dubbed the Houston Mass Murders, and at the time, they were considered the worst serial murders in U.S. history.

Corll, an electrician and former candy store owner (hence his moniker), conscripted the help of teens David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley to lure other boys to his apartment, where they were handcuffed and shackled to a plywood torture board before being sexually assaulted and killed, according to the Associated Press.
---------------------------
Corll's known victims were found in mass graves located across the Greater Houston Area. Four bodies were buried in San Augustine near Lake Sam Rayburn in East Texas; seven were buried on the beach at High Island in Southeast Texas; and 17 were buried in a Houston boathouse of Corll's, according to the Associated Press.
---------------------------
Some had cords wrapped around their necks, and tape strapped around their feet and mouths and a few had been sexually mutilated, according to the Associated Press. Most of the bodies were badly decomposed and difficult to identify.
Finding more victims may give some families that needed closure.
This guy was the #1 body count serial killer until John Wayne Gacey was discovered.
The horrors Corll did are the stuff of nightmares.

We will never give up our guns Steve, we don't care if there is a mass shooting every day of the week.

Odds are that Corill had more victims than Gacy - and we will never really know the true number. Much of where he buried bodies on High Island is now under water, and HPD pretty much just quit doing any type of investigating on this case when they hit 28 confirmed. The way HPD handled this is probably as big of a crime as the murders, but nothing will ever be done about it.

One of the most horrific mass murder case of all time.

Its so horrific that it is somehow not nearly as famous as other cases from around the US.

This is true.
It seemed like it was "In the news, then poof, gone" in a short time back in the early 70's.
But in the 70s it seemed like murder was everywhere.
No mass shootings like today, but as the economy declined the creepshow increased.
Zodiac, Son of Sam, Gacey, Cryll, Bundy, Bianchi, the guy who became the Golden State Killer.
Battle of Flowers parade in SA had a sniper in 1979.
New Orleans had the black panther sniper in 1973. (Look up Mark James Essex)

Don't really hear about mass murder any more. Is it not a thing? Too much technology for people to get away with it for that long?

Last one I remember is the DC shooters but I lived there at the time so maybe that's why.

This guy is probably the most prolific serial killer in world history. There are estimates of possibly more than 1000 victims.

It's going to be very hard to ever know just how many this guy killed. All we know is that it was likely astronomically high.

I'm reading an interesting book right now called '23 Minutes in Hell'. If what is described in that book is accurate, he's getting his just rewards for eternity.

It's probably easier than ever to do it now. I believe that something like 95% of serial killers are never caught.

When I saw the thread title, I was thinking of this guy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Clark_O%27Bryan

He completely ruined Halloween for my generation. To my knowledge, the only victim was his son who he poisoned for the insurance money. Both are monsters.

This will never get much press because he's an illegal immigrant.

Remember the I-45 murders?

Is the prevailing theory that the killer died or got picked up and is in prison for an unrelated crime?

Been dozens of bodies, mostly of young women, dumped along the Gulf Freeway between Houston and Galveston for decades. Many have been solved with several different people convicted.

The most notorious involved 5 or 6 bodies discovered in the same area near League City. These are most likely the work of a serial killer, but every body that has been found along I-45 is not the work of this same killer.

I too find it hard to believe how forgotten the Heights murders have become. I read up on them a few years back after seeing something about it on tv, having never heard of them myself. Gruesome.

A photograph of an unidentified boy was found among forgotten personal effects of the perpetrators a few years ago, and underscores just how many potential victims may never be known:

The Harris County DA that prosecuted Henley was Carol Vance. He's wrote a book about his career called "Boomtown DA". Interesting read, if you like to hear good back stories. He talked about the challenges of a case like this since the level of paparazzi in Houston had never reached these levels. Also the toll on the victims' families, his staff and Vance personally. I believe there was a 2nd trial for Henley, and Vance decided it was time to retire to private practice.

Some took decades to solve. I think there were numerous bodies dumped along that section of highway because it was the first section of largely undeveloped land on the way out of Houston, at least at the time.

The stress of this case caused at least 1 HPD homicide detective to commit suicide.

Back then, no one thought about the mental strain these kind of cases put on the police who had to investigate them.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Easier than ever to be a serial killer? What? I've come to the exact opposite conclusion. What makes you say that? Not even trying to play gotcha or something, im looking forward to hearing things I haven't considered.

I seem to recall your post on a GB thread several years ago maybe? It was one of those "how close did you come to death" or "did you ever know anyone murdered" that pop up once in a while. As a mom of four sons, these stories always break me. I cannot imagine what these families have been through and I pray they are able to find peace. I'm not sure I would survive it.

May have also been me. One of my dads good friends was picked up by Dean a few nights before Elmer killed him. Dean kept touching his leg while driving and he kept telling Dean he wasn't into that. After multiple touches they were stopped at a red light and dads friend popped Dean in the nose and jumped out of the car and laid down in the tall grass of a field. Dean circled a few times in the vehicle then gave up and left.
