This year. I understand the need for free and reduced lunch for kids in need and acknowledge that while only a small %, we have those students in our district. I also admit that this is a nice perk for our family if I don't think about it very deeply.

But really? The vast majority of the population in BISD does not need a break with school lunches. This is...not right.

Don't worry, it will be paid by a property tax on the wealthy. Shouldn't cost anyone other than the wealthy a dime.

I'm sure the CAD hasn't been keeping any eye on the meteoric rise on land prices near Boerne.

This is being paid for by the USDA.... still part of Covid relief crap. Any district that wants to can still have free lunch for everyone.

I think it is absolutely right. It used to piss me off that I was shelling out $75 a week for my 3 kids to eat school lunch while half the school ate the same meals for free. It was just another form of wealth redistribution. I know they will never stop feeding the low income kids, so why not just feed them all. It seems fair to me, I know my school taxes are plenty high to pay for it.

Its the same in Fort Bend ISD. So many parts of Fort Bend have very high median household incomes and yet you can still get free meals.

Agree. Take advantage of everything you can get your hands on because your childrens' futures are being sacrificed for it, regardless of what you do. Might as well get some benefit for your money.

College Station did the same thing last year.

How many parents were working from home? They didn't have time to pack a sandwich in the mornings?

I understand expanding it for people that were forced out of work due to the shutdown. People working hourly got screwed by the government by that.

But not everyone needed a free lunch.

Don't think the federal government has a property tax, or a CAD.

You must be hanging out in a different part of Boerne and SV than I've hung out in.

SV is full of divorced moms.

This is a strong point. As it stands it is super easy to get free meals anyway so basically the only people who pay are those who are already paying the most in property taxes. So the choice is wealth redistribution/welfare or government provided services for all attendees. The option of getting strict about free lunches isn't happening so your choice is to be a sucker who pays or not.

Right. As I posted in an another thread on this topic, there is rampant fraud around these types of programs. School districts no longer have the fortitude to implement and enforce eligibility rules.

So you get lots of families driving over from their $400,000 homes in their late model Mercedes to request free lunches and free pre-K for the kids. And the schools say "Okay,"

They will even instruct their young children to pretend they can't speak English so they can enroll in pre-K.

Since the Feds supply the free and reduced meal program I have to wonder if this is a huge Fed money dump and the money can only be spent in this way?

I think the schools can decide how to use it and most are going this route. It's the easiest to implement and the least to get backlash. Not only that they can claim to care about kids.

This is a prime example of government scope creep.

Once upon a time schools existed to educate kids. Now they feed them too

Once upon a time the USDA existed to create government policy to ensure the nation had a steady supply of food. Now they feed kids at school because their parents do not

One of these days HUD will be working with schools to provide homes on school property. We won't need parents anymore because government does everything for them.

Creating the broad expectation and dependency that results in government spending on contracts for "preferred providers" that don't have to compete fairly in the marketplace. "Minority or veteran owned" or friends/relatives of local officials, or big corporate donors, and that sort of mess. It just funnels them money.

It also results in a vast amount of waste. Instead of meals customized by the parents to the needs or wants of the kids, they get easy to handle, cheap to make and profitable processed food options with a high volume of disposable trash packaging and a huge amount of which is thrown away by the students or goes unused. I've heard many many accounts from teachers and parents how wasteful these programs are.

Well, what about the children? Michelle Obama was adamant about providing healthy food for kids and you are calling it crap? Which is it? They are doing this in KISD again. Most here don't need it, so use my tax dollars for something else and quit raising them as well! They are still building new schools here which just amazes me. Cap the enrollment and move on
