If it comes down to legislation. . . The governor is a Longhorn.
I'm not saying that Texas doesn't have power but Abbott being a sip doesn't mean much, especially because the Governor has very little real power. I just don't see how Texas can go against virtually every other school in the State. This will destroy the AD's at Tech, TCU, and Baylor and A&M is opposed. That's a hell of a mountain to climb.

That assumes they have political power to stop this. When we moved to the SEC I don't think it took an act of the legislature to do anything. I think they can sign whatever realignment deals they want to, but if I'm wrong I'm wrong.

If you're Tech, Baylor etc what can you do? Options off the top of my head:
1. Lobby the politicians to make a law
2. Get the PAC or Big to write a big money offer to you and tu/OU so you have a life raft
3. Go quietly into the night
4. Sue for tortuous interference lol.

I told you all, NIL destroyed the NCAA and everyone knows it. The SEC is more powerful than the NCAA now and it will be the kingmaker of collegiate athletics moving forward.

It will happen, I am almost 100% certain. Everything is changing in college sports. What schools once valued about college sports now matters far less because of NIL. The NCAA is now toothless and serves almost no purpose.

This is what happens when courts say kids can get paid.

Texas has access to check books like no other school with a solid athletic program.

Moving to the SEC provides the Bass family, the McCombs (the big cigars, as we call them) the ability to starr throwing millions at top recruits. College football is about to be SOLELY about the haves and have nots.

Happening quicker than I imagined (re. NIL). Players were already sitting out bowl games, this will only compound that, IMO

They can do that where they are, too.

Perhaps I'm just not seeing the unintended consequences yet, but I don't think my A&M fandom has historically been related to purity of the sport vs. cheering for the team at the school I went to as passionately as I cheer for the Dodgers. The extra money may make an unlevel playing field, but it could also potentially distract impressionable kids from doing the work to be great ("I already made it, and got paid, why work hard?") and get punched in the mouth by a hungrier and more prepared Tulsa / Fresno St.

I think most folks are overreacting - we can absolutely compete and win with these guys in the league. LSU has better football advantages and similar proximity and we are actively passing them right up.

My only question is why this is the best option for the SEC. I'd have been much more interested in Clemson and a program from the midAtlantoc (UNC, Va Tech, NCState, etc)

I don't think the SEC is blind to how bad of a business partner t.u. is. Any potential short term monetary gain is going to be outweighed by the destructive long term nature of t.u.. You just don't marry the psychotic drug addict no matter how big her hooters are.

This would not even be on the table without the CFP expansion talks.

Sip always seeks the easiest path to the NC. The SEC is currently the hardest path; but that changes with CFP-12.

This is what everyone is realizing. The scramble for access to money has only just begun. No one wants to be left behind and that's going to drive some decisions that look insane on the surface but make sense long term when you realize the NCAA means nothing now.

NIL is a likely fatal injury to college athletics.

Once the Supreme Court hears the case over whether or not schools can pay players directly simply for playing, then that will be the coup de grace.

It will be about 10-12 big money schools, and no one else. Odds are most universities outside of those tagging along with the big money schools, will simply drop most if not all athletics.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

SEC has said this multiple times.

The sips bring them nothing that they want.

Sip network is ESPN which has the SEC network so that is not a hindrance.

Sips bring them money.

From everything i have heard this is close to a done deal. Maybe announced in weeks. The Ags and Miz appear to be the only 2 no votes. It takes 11 yes votes and if you think about it, we are the ONLY school that loses by adding tu.

This is a profound point and I'm not yet if I agree that this is an inevitable conclusion but it is definitely a possibility. Even the power 4 (ne 5) have weaker members who can't keep up. Will they fold? The SEC gaining huge market share in a shrinking market may be terrible for everyone.

I don't want to go back to a world where poor inner city kids get kicked off the team for signing sports memorabilia to make ends meet, but the millionaire freshman QB isn't the alternative I had in mind either.

If the sips really brought eyeballs and money, Fox would want to keep them in the Big XII. When the conference media partner doesn't GAS if their two top brands depart, then they are a loosing proposition.

There's the deafening SEC silence and the hasty B12 meeting today to suggest this isn't media fodder.

And say what you will about OU/tu, their departments aren't usually amateur hour and stories like this rarely come out unless the cake is nearly baked.

Lots of smoke pointing to this being close.

False. Ultimately, every school in the SEC will lose, just like the SWC and B12. SEC schools just aren't wise enough to see it.

There won't be divisions anymore. Bama and Aubbie won't be moving to the east division. Numbers don't work for an 8 team division.

And notice the pod system that ESPN had all ready to go on SEC Network has 9 conference games not 8. That just further cannibalizes the SEC. Saw that happen when the B1G and PAC went to 9 conference games and the Big XII had to do so because they have no divisions.

This is a very bad idea all of the way around.

Yes Doc and also tu and ou know the disadvantage they have in recruiting. They will both get a bump when they have the SEC to sell.
