It was crazy when they were stuck choosing between him and David Duke and the motto was "vote for the crook."

Having lived in NOLA during that time, most Edward supporters liked him because he hadn't taken directly from their pockets. Duke, being a former klansman actually had very good positions on getting Louisiana out of the old "era", but his ties killed any chances. Just like when the "Indian" ran for governor years back, they didn't vote for him because his skin was too dark. Their rednecks were way bad.

Bobby Jindal was probably one of the best governors Louisiana has ever had and the least corrupt.

Gov. Jindal was also one of the GOP rising stars (who knows, maybe can be again?) but he violated the cardinal unwritten rule: Do Not, under any circumstances, accept the "honor" of giving the partisan rebuttal at a STOU. 9 times out of ten it is a momentum killer, and the upside doesn't = the risk for the ambitious imo. It held for Democrats too, like Gebhardt.

Pretty low bar. I didn't mind Mike Foster. I was long gone b4 Jindal but most conservative Louisianan's I know say he was underwhelming as Gov in spite of his very solid credentials . They said at the end of the day he got nothing significant done which obviously wasn't all his fault. I think he screwed up the state's budgeting pretty badly by relying too much on oil and gas prices as well.

Talk about a snake politician. That guy was the poster child.
In comparison...probably 'small potatoes' today.

Lol. I dunno, I think he was ahead of his time. I will say this . I think he was happy keeping his kingdom afloat mostly just in Louisiana . He didn't seem to have National aspirations.

So in the Middle Ages or dynastic China, he would have just been one of the better warlords. None of which would be accused of being above criminal actions, but were basically looking out for their lands.

If by "looking out for their lands " you mean his own pocketbook, power, and influence then I suppose so. Edwards did help people and I believe he understood quid pro quo very well.

For those that tried to compare him to Bill Clinton. I think he was smarter than that . My evidence: look at his wives.:. And then look at Bill's. Whatever Bill saved/gained by keeping Hillary was nowhere close to worth it

Wow. Never knew until well after HS and college that the REAL way to get chicks was to do time and get them to write and marry you while in the joint. Seems to have worked for many cons.
Sure thing! As long as you also have 10 million in the bank!

In 2011, Edwards married Trina Grimes, his prison pen pal. The two began corresponding while he was serving his sentence for corruption. He was 83-years-old at the time of their wedding and she was 32. In 2013, they gave birth to their child Eli Wallace Edwards.

So he was still up and running at 83. Impressive!

I always thought he was a slimy scumbag politician, but seeing this pic. I realize he is my hero.

He has the distinction of being the only democratic I ever voted for in my life. I was living in Louisiana the year he and David Duke were running for governor.

his second wife was Candy - she was 37 years his junior. I saw them both one night at a steakhouse bar in BR. He controlled that room that night.

My wife went to LSU and she said it was common to see his limo on sorority row late in the evenings.

Most everyone I have talked to in La. acknowledged he was a crook (pretty typical for a La politician), but they all said he was a good man who would help anyone that needed it.

Is this why he was in prison?

Extortion, racketeering, bribes, etc. White collar stuff.
aka being a politician in Louisiana.
