I remember being in Louisiana in the early 1990s when he was running for governor against klansman David Duke. Most people I talked to were frustrated as hell these two pieces of crap were their only choices.

My parents moved our family the hell outta Louisiana in the 90s when they were forced to vote in a runoff election between Ed Edwards and David Duke for governor.

Yep. A future convicted felon vs an ex grand wizard. What a choice. I didn't vote in that race. Was supposed to be home a week before voting day but got stuck overseas. I wouldn't have voted in that race anyway but would have def pulled the lever for Bush over Clinton.

In 2011, Edwards married Trina Grimes, his prison pen pal. The two began corresponding while he was serving his sentence for corruption. He was 83-years-old at the time of their wedding and she was 32. In 2013, they gave birth to their child Eli Wallace Edwards.

So he was still up and running at 83. Impressive!

If his guy was named "Eduardo" and lived as a Central American caudillo this would be a news footnote.

He was just that in the US, a criminal caudillo who made headlines and attracted sycophant fans like a mob boss and made headlines for decades.

He was a typical democrat with symbolism over substance.
The only substances he cared about were money and power.
He was not a drinker, he preferred womanizing and gambling.

Time for Louisiana to close this chapter in this Last Hayride.

his second wife was Candy - she was 37 years his junior. I saw them both one night at a steakhouse bar in BR. He controlled that room that night.

My wife went to LSU and she said it was common to see his limo on sorority row late in the evenings.

Most everyone I have talked to in La. acknowledged he was a crook (pretty typical for a La politician), but they all said he was a good man who would help anyone that needed it.

I met Governor Edwards at Don's Seafood in Gonzales a few years back. Living in TX and growing up here, I had no idea who he was. He seemed like a nice enough guy and a gifted politician. He was with his pen pal wife and I believe their baby. Very strange situation...
